Wow! Angry are we? Did I hit a nerve or what? Actually I have an XBOX, and I don't like it. I bought it with an open mind, and I knew it had some sick specs for the time, but now I regret it. I regret that I have personally helped continue the decline of gaming. I have bought a copy of Halo, and the lackluster sequel. I bought the extra controllers after the re-design. I have in a very small way ruined gaming for the future gamers. It isn't completely the gamer's fault, however, it is the existence of the XBOX has ruined gaming (most notably for Nintendo). It has changed gaming in general, and if companies don't conform, they lose, and Nintendo is going to take the biggest hit. Don't get me wrong I'm no Nintendo fanboy either. I haven't bought a Nintendo console since the SNES. I'm not a fanboy of anything, but I have had to just settle for the PS2. I guess their games are more to my taste. I prefer gameplay to plot, because well, a great story doesn't exactly make a great game. Just look at Killzone. It’s got an interesting, although slightly overused, story but the gameplay just isn't fun. Who wants the "realism" of hopping small obstacles, gun lag, motion blurs (seriously, who sees blurs when they run), and LENS FLARES (what genius thought of that? I really want my players to squint when all they can see is mist, and a huge lens flare across the screen! Yeah, NICE!). Red Faction on the other hand has a very simple linear story, but the gameplay is as fun as the Unreal series (except for Unreal Championship 2, that was garbage). I could go into other genres, but I don’t think you have delved into gaming that does not include a first person view. Don't get me wrong the Playstation has many faults as well. It has basically given EA power to make thousands of games, not to mention allowing any developer to make any piece of trash to package and sell as a game (Nintendo is very selective of the games they release on their consoles, or the used to be), but flooding the market is not the only problem the PS2 has. Its under-developed online play is far behind the XBOX (lucky there is nothing to play for XBOX-Live), and most peripherals are dropped like a backwards soldering iron (the Eye-toy, and the hard drive easily come to mind). Its funny that you would call me a fanboy to protect your precious XBOX. Why do you like the XBOX? What makes it so special? What makes you a fan? I'm a fan of gaming, and I don't like the XBOX. I'm not flaming you by the way, but I feel that your attack was unnecessary, and unsupported.vb_master wrote:Shut up, fanboy.atkafighter wrote:The whole XBOX360 idea is ridiculous. To vbmaster:
While a bit passionate about his points, all atkafighter really did was say he didn't like XBOX360, especially the controller, and gave SPECIFIC REASONS WHY. That is key.
He gave reasons for his arguments and showed no specific loyalty to any system/company. Sorry, vbmaster, but I have to agree that your comment was incorrect and inappropriate for this particular situation, and he does have the right to voice his opinion, as long as he does so reasonably and intelligently. Though in a somewhat heated manner, he met those needs.
To atkafighter and others:
As for you, atkafighter, your post was a bit off topic, but since it was brought about by the post of Reploid Ayla, There shouldn't be much of a problem there. These threads on next gen systems always descend into this kind of thing eventually anyway.
(All of this is theory, so don't flame me, ok?)
I have not held the XBox 360 controller, but I have held the XBox controller, and it is a bit confusing. I also agree with some of your views on the XBox, though much of my concerns are more about the library and hardware involved.
From a hardware standpoint though, I can understand why they'd change the XBox over to the 360.
Most video game systems are custom computer and electronics systems that are engineered from the ground up for video gameplay. The XBox was basically a Pentium III 733MHz computer with 64MB SDRAM, underpowered, even for it's release, when compared to the newest PC.
Thus, it is conceivable that the XBox was comparatively inefficient at using it's hardware power, as the 6x86 architecture was designed for purposes other than gaming initially, and they just loaded it with special software. Perhaps this was so they could use code they were already familiar with.
Though I disagree with their initial decision for using existing PC technology, I agree that as far as an x86 class computer is concerned, it is old, nearing obsolete, with less than 25% the clock speed of a modern 3GHz machine. XBox, due not to it's age, but it's own faults in design due to laziness in said design, needs a revamp to compete with modern systems.
Besides, if everyone else was releasing next-gen systems and Microsoft didn't, it'd be bad for image, no matter how much power the XBox had. In my opinion, XBox's development was not followed through correctly, and that, along with image and competition, is why it is needed for XBox to shift to the 360 so soon.
As for reverse compatibility problems, that is understandable. To have true reverse compatibility, the XBox360 would have to be x86 compatible, which would be a financial strain. Though using a PowerPC core isn't the best option for the 360, it's a step in the right direction: Away from the x86 architecture. However, this means that any reverse compatibility has to come as a price of either...
A. The PowerPC system emulating the x86 architecture (maybe using a variant of the original Virutal PC software for a Mac-based platform or something better)
B. Using both a PowerPC and a 733MHZ+ x86 chip on board.
Option A could be messy, and B could easily raise the price of the system. it likely costs more than it is really worth to make a 733MHz processor, especially when they obviously do not want to design new tech and chips from the ground up. With Microsoft's losses from the XBox, Option B isn't really viable, leaving partial reverse compatibility in PowerPC's x86 emulation the best we can really hope for.
Worst case scenario, all the games have to be recompiled into PowerPC using a sort of assembler or translation system. This could be messy and waste processing power as well.
As for the triggers, they look remarkably like the Dreamcast's triggers, and those worked for me, in spite of how not used to them I was. I think that though it looks weird, it could work after getting over the initial shock of using our middle fingers on triggers rather than our indexes like on the DC.
When it comes to system controllers, I have learned to reserve some judgement until after I hold them in my hands and use them. The NGC controller taught me that, because I did (and still do) think it looks funky, but it is quite comfortable and easy to use when held. We can speculate on controller feel, but only to an extent.
I would also like to state that I am not defending Microsoft, but rather trying to rationalize on why they may be doing these things, rather than immediately resorting to player hating.
As for the reasonability of the mod, at least it's something.
If they had built in turbo buttons with a clock, some switches, and some AND gates, I'd be really interested.

That controller doesn't even look very comfortable. The shoulder/trigger buttons look like a last minute change. Primary fire = shoulder button, and secondary fire = trigger? Great lack of thinking M. I also could care less for the crossed thumb input (feels so stupid). As for the mod I think I have to give it a BFD.

I don't understand how someone can hate the XBox 360 just because of the controllers. They are almost exactly the same as the original XBox S-Controllers. Whatever.Reploid Ayla wrote:im going to pause and let you think about that one...vb_master wrote:Shut up, fanboy.atkafighter wrote:The whole XBOX360 idea is ridiculous. I say this sentance and the following sentances only.
The Xbox has ruined gaming, and the next generation game machines won't play games. Xbox = MS trying to make the worlds most popular Windows Media Centre machine. How much do you want to be the next console will be called the Xbox Media Centre/er 2009? Or something cheezy like that? With new faceplates each year to make it 2010 or something.
And do not say that I'm a fanboy. My Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube get equal time on my TV. Its just that M$'s concepts are ruining gaming. And Sony isn't much of a help either.
Nintendo must save videogames.
End quote.

Here's my $.02 (.01 pounds, 1.75 yen, 12.5% of a Chuck-E-Cheese token, 1 billion Bic Fun Bucks
)
GCN: A dedicated gaming console. It has the good classic games and well-known characters parents trust, and the gory games for it are not advertised prominently. This is what is keeping parents buying it. They recognize Mario and Link and Samus from their childhood and get all nostalgaic and buy the system for their kids. In my opinion it's kind of lackluster in the size of the games (in gigs) so it must either have some extreme software compression or the graphics aren't all textured. It's kind of like the PSX vs the N64. I thought some of the N64's graphics looked like JPEGs. Thankfuly the GC isn't that bad, but as far as cutscenes go, I've seen better results on other systems. As afr as the controllers go, I don't like tham all that much. It just feels kind of small in my hands. (Another reason I'm not buying the Micro)
Xbox: I'll try to ignore my hated of Microsoft for a while. This thing's huge, and the graphics aren't all too bad However, I haven't seen too many exclusive titles for it. The Xbox basically ruined dedicated gaming by overcomplicating things with a hard drive and this huge-arsed behemouth of a console that dominates over my 13" TV. (I don't own one, but I borrowed a friend's) I've used the XB controllers, and be they the original or the mini controllers, I just don't like the feel of them, and I don't like the layout. The analog shoulder buttons are kinda cool, though. However, I might buy an Xbox sometime to softmod it with Linux so I can use it as a multimenia/Internet set-top box. When it comes to modding, the Xbox is the king.
PS2: the only current-soon-to-be-outdated gen. system I own, and I have no regrets about it. I like the feel of the controllers (have since the SNES) and the console doesn't need almost as much space as my car does. Plus, since I really really really really dislike analog sticks, the analog D-pad and buttons help a lot. It's backwards-compatible with all my old PSX stuff, so I don't have to keep swapping put consoles all the time. DVD playback works just fine with the controller, and the DVD remote is another plus. However, a downfall for this, and boththe other systems is that they don'rt work with DVDs through a VCR!
My TV is coax-only, and I don't want to buy the PS2 RF adapter, so I'm basically stuck. But whatever, my PC monitor is bigger than my TV anyways!
Long story short (all my poinions):
Wireless controllers are stupid
I <3 PS2
I like GCN
I </3 Xbox
VCR connectivity sucks (but for games works fine)
I'll probably get a PS3 in about 3 years. (yes I'm a late adopter. I like to wait for the prices to go down. And just look at all the people who bought N-Gages as soon as they cam out!

I completely agree that wireless controllers/mice/keyboards/ad infinitum are retarded. I don't want to have to buy or recharge batteries for everything I own. I would also like to avoid getting hand cancer because of wireless everything (yeah thats dumb but possibly valid). On systems I own a SNES, N64, GameBoy original, and a Game Gear with SMS games. So I am a Nintendo fanboy
I liked to play the PSX because it had geat fighting games, I don't like turn based RPGs and there were few other games that I liked for it so I never bought one. I liked the Sega Saturn aahhh remember the hype, Virtual Fighter one of the best games ever Sega put it out for PC so I bought it, but the Saturn died so that is that. The only console exclusive titles worth having for X-box are the Star Wars ones and Halo, but I bought Halo for PC so I don't really want an X-box. The PS2 has a ton of great fighting games VF4 and so on but I can't justify buying one just to play fighting games. I also think it is pathetic that Sony has yet to put out a controller with the analog stick in a dominant position, I think their controllers are really uncomfortable to use the analog sticks on. NGC has all of the classic Nintendo games and finally a great fighting game with Soul Calibur, so if I were going to buy a current gen console I would get a GCN but I still play my old school games and don't have tons of cash to buy a new console and games so I don't own any of them. But if the Revolution is a cool as it appears to be I may get one. Why I wrote all of that I am still not sure.....

What it all comes down to is what types of games you like.
PS2: sports and action titles, mostly. Has a lot of cheap titles.
XboX: FPS's is what the controller is good for. But it has some RPG's.
GCN: Lots of good, oldskool fun. Mario, Metroid and Zelda.
I don't like the xbox, and I will personally go and laugh at the people buying xbox360 on launch day. Of course, i'll buy one when it costs as much as an N64 does now. Hopefully, it will crash and burn, the way dreamcast did. The xbox360 reminds me of it... Same controller, white, released a little too early, etc. The only thing it doesn't have is a power advantage over the later systems. Oh well. Here's too hoping that microsoft goes the way of the sega (or even better, atari!)

Laugh and the world laughs with you; It's inhabitants are an entirely different story.
