Nesp Almost Complete...NEED HELP!

Post by minkster »

ok so I finally have every wire soldered on. The psone screen, the video amplifier, controls, and of course the nes board  So I go and try to turn on the switch to see if my hard work payed off, and it did...kinda. I ran it off the wall outlet and the psone screen flashed white and then just stayed black. I could hear a little buzzing noise, but that was just about it. It might be the trace to the video thats not soldered on all the way, but I followed the trace, since it broke and wired it with ribbon cable. I cant seem to figure out why this thing wont turn on and play a nes game. Please can someone help, I'm like almost finished! :D

check your grounds. Usually that's a problem, somewhere.

I think you might of fried it, wall outlets have unpredictable power, leading to the frying :(

I don't think I fried it...but I think something is causing it to short out. I will check the grounds to make sure they are connected, but I think I may need to put some electrical tape on a couple spots. I hope i didnt fry it...how would I know if I did or not anyways?

to check if it's fried, hook something else (ps2, gc, xbox, etc) that u know works up to the screen. If it works, there's something wrong with NES connections. No work, screen problem.

Well, I'm no expert at electronics, but I have no clue how to go about hooking it up to another system I own, and the screen I bought was brand new. Maybe it is a problem with the NES...I think tomorow I'll post some screenshots of my wiring because I really dont want to have to buy another NES... I really worked hard on this...I hope I can find a simple fix :(
EDIT: I realized that I didn't do the LED mod for my psone screen hooked up to the NES. I know some people like atkafighter didn't do this mod. So I assume it would be okay If I didn't do it either. But he did have a NOAC compared to me having the original system. Do you think that too much power is being used (by using the original lighting) causing the screen to short out?

The LED mod replaced the cold cathode so it will take less amperage to run. To hook the screen into another console is easy. The best thing to use is a VCR, Cable, or Sattelite. Just take an RCA connetor with bare leads on one end and twist tie each lead to the Composite video of the screen. You could go the extra mile and solder the leads to the screen. Now just plug it into your output devices video out. You can do the same for the audio to make sure its still working.

Well, its not the screen, it worked on my ps2...so yeah its most likely the NES board, and all my connections are soldered on well...my guess is its probably when I first desoldered the RF Modulator...I did a bad job desoldering the three pins causing me to use the traces on each one in order to grasp a connection..so I'm guessing I'll need to get another nes board

when I first rigged mine up, my speaker wires were shorting out, and it was causing it to kick off, kind of like what you are describing. Thought I'd mention it, if it might help.

and don't give up on your current NES board yet, they can take more abuse than you might think! :)

Wow, that is similar to whats happening to mine....it seems like the audio makes a buzzing noise while the screen flashes white for a second and then turns black. But the screen isnt off...just there is no light going into it...its like as if there is an overload of power causing it to short out so quickly. I'm running out of ideas. I'll keep trying stuff though. :x

when you tested the screen on your ps2, did you have the speaker setup the same as when you have it hooked up to the nes? if not, you might try desoldering the speaker, and maybe scraping between the connection on the psone board (to make sure it's not shorting there... but it probably isn't if it worked on your ps2). then see if you can get the nes to work with no sound... at least that will help to narrow the problem down.

I experimented by desoldering my audio connection to the NES and now the screen just blinks white every 2 seconds :? ...I think its a power issue...well now im charging my battery up to see what happens when I hook that up to the NES...I'll probably hafta get off my lazy ass and at least attempt the LED mod, maybe it will solve my power problems.

hey minkster, I've thought of a couple more questions... first, what kind of battery are you using? If it's not 9.6 volts and you're using ben's design, you have to make some changes in how you power the screen. and second, the blinking screen is the equivalent of the flashing blue screen when a normal nes is hooked up to a tv. you might make sure the 72 pin connector is firmly seated on the nes mobo, and if it's an old connector, you might want to try cleaning it. I use a q-tip and that orange cleaner stuff you can get at any store, I cleaned my 72 pin and all of my games, and I haven't had a connection problem since!

I followed bens design really, with the exception of my own case...I'm using an Ni-MH 9.6volt battery and I finished charging it...and guess what...I got a lit up screen! 8) But yeah the NES isnt working yet. I'll try cleaning the cartridge connector tomorow. Hopefully I can get this thing up and running sometime soon.
