Instead of buying tolls(such as a soldering iron or whatever) rent them, its pretty cheap to rent tools at your local home depot.

well, I don't buy "tolls" I buy tools, and renting is just asking for something to happen, how do you know that the last person who rented it did to it? they could test them at the store, but what would happen if it crapped out on you? you would be blamed, therefore it's easier to buy, not rent

just buy them, you don't have to worry about returning it ever so you can take as much time and do as much as you want with them

It's not like the tools to get started are very expensive, you could drop a
$50 at harbor freight and be in good shape with a digital meter, soldering irons, solder, magnifying galss, etc. Take $7 out of that for security bits off of ebay and you're set.

You can get decent solderring irons for $10. If you plan to make more than one portable, or use your tools for other things, renting everytime gets expensive.

I go to tech school and believe me you never can have enough tools buy them if you can its worth it. They do pay for themselves after 2 or 3 uses, if you think that you're only going to use a tool once then rent it but if you're going to be using them more than once I would buy it if I could. Take care of your tools and they'll last a lifetime.

I buy most of my tools, as I use them a lot and, quite frankly, I don't see how it could be more cost-effective. I mean between my tools and my dad's, there's a couple good, corded (plug in) drills, a decent multimeter, 2 Weller iorns, various drill bits, an air compressor (a big one, not one of the portable models) , a random-orbital sander, a pressure washer, a Sawzall, a bandsaw, circular saw... stuff like that.

I can justify the price of renting something like a Rug Doctor or a wet saw or another specialized tool you'd need once in a blue moon, but for Dremels and drills and other common tools, it's more cost-effective in the long run to buy a decent tool (one that won't crap out on you in a year) than it is to rent all the time.
