I know what you all mean. ^^ Heck, I still have my old 5.25 inch floppies, and even a few 8 inchers lying around. I wish I still had an 8 inch drive, and could hook it up to a modern system somehow...

I'll also have to root through my diskettes and make a Tetris boot disk. THAT was fun.

Live CDs rule. Damn Small Linux is amazing, and I'm barely scratched the surface! My college professors don't mind me using Live CDs at all, either. ^^

That reminds me, I wonder if I can get one of the old Mac SEs from my PC servicing teacher...the newest apple machine I possess is an Apple ][c, circa 1985.

they just locked up our new laptops and replace the desktops with old computers that were 95 and just upgraded them to xp and thought that upgrading it would fix it.

I cant belive that the word "retard" came to mind as the first though after reading this.

At my school they dont care about live-CDs. Though considering I burn Slax and DSL to mini-CDs its limiting me one the number of Dells I can run them on (most are lying on the side).

As for Macs. I used one for the better part of 3 years (got one to take home). It was alright for a 5400. I dont hate macs as a result of my school having them I generally hated the computers they had because they were old and slow. In fact with the mac server that we had that connect to the common (out personal internet, for the whole school) the server only crashed when we flooded it with downloads like games. Once those were outlawed we had no problem.

change the screen upside down. not the moniter the screen so when some one go on it it is upside down. another one is to invert the screens.

One of the funniest things I've ever done with a computer is also the easiest and by FAR the dumbest. In my programming class, I saw that my neighbor's computer screen was still on and QUITE charged up, so I took a piece of paper roughly the same area as the screen, drew a messed up desktop with an error in 1337speak on it, and used the static electricity to hold it in place. It was just something to do out of boredom, and you'd think that the other person would just see it and take it off, right?

Heck no.

For reasons I have yet to understand, the person thought it was a real error screen and flipped out, until the teacher came over and removed the sheet of paper from the monitor's face. I didn't get in trouble, either. She just laughed. People can be pretty stupid. I know one thing though. I'm going to use Visual Basic and a printer to make a more realistic paper error screen next time. ^^*

Also, when it comes to messing with people's heads and making fake error messages, Visual Basic can be nice.

I remember replacing Solitare's shortcut path with a fake critical error message that wouldn't go away until the user used End Task or just turned off the computer...and believe it or not, most people don't even know about End Task, so they'll turn off their box and erase all their work. Serves you right for playing Solitare on a school computer! ^^* And the occassional method of fixing a problem by just rebooting and trying again? Doesn't work here. If the person is stubborn, you could be in for hours of swearing and entertainment!

One day, I'm going to take a Windows 95 or 98 installation and try to make every shortcut and icon normally used point to an error message of some type. SOmething like if the user clicks on Internet Explorer...

"Critical Error. Internet Explorer has had a critical error in 81|_|_647350\/\/|\|5j00x10000. Change to a browser that doesn't suck as bad."

or maybe something like...

"Critical Error. Windows is tired of accessing your perverted pictures. Windows ANGRY! WINDOWS SMASH!"

Last year I set all the homepages for my classroom's computers to http://www.yaromat.com/macos8 :D (It uses javascript to run a fake "deleting windows" DOS screen, and then runs a fake Mac OS environment :P)

The year before that I made a DOS boot floppy and put Dig Dug on it. So I went around putting the floppy in, resetting the computers, and letting DigDug load. You should've seen people! Alt+Tab, Ctrl+Alt+Del (not tragically 1337), and a bunch of other stuff before they finally gave up and yanked the power cord out of frustration! (Well with the hell they put me through, because I keep trying to fix them after they copulate them up... :P)

I remember once I replaced the Windows 98 startup screen with the Blue Screen of Death (just a bitmap, mind you... :P) Windows was just fine, but people panicked and reset the computer when they saw it. Over, and over, and over...

Oh, I LOVE messing with the startup and shutdown screens! ^^ I always thought it odd that the images were stretched from half width though...at least in my system. the image was full size tall, but only 320 pixels wide. Still, it was fun.

Make a 8-bit bitmap (.BMP) and save it to Logo.sys in your root directory.
