as a collector, I have always had serious doubts about the xbox's durability. Specifically I wonder about the hard disk and how long it will take to develop bad sectors and begin to screw up. In my opinion, the xbox was designed to play games for 5 years or so, and then promptly die. After half a decade with a PC, you can pretty much also count on the IDE controller going out, and the power supply. DVDrom will probably start skipping too. No, the xbox is going to turn into a glitchy junk heap, rather than a cool retro console.

Aside from that, It won't be collectable because it's just another common system that everybody has rotting in their closet. If it weren't for the emulators, it would collect as much dust as my PS2.
The xbox might not be a collectible but It wont die if you take care of it. Old pcs had hard drives and they still work so why should the xbox be any different If a part breaks all you have to do is replace it its not like one day you go to play it and its completely dead for no reason.

The xbox might not be a collectible
Sure they are, they are collecting dust in Bill's warehouse. ZING! *does worst Quagmire impression ever* Heh Heh ALL right! In all seriousness there is very little desire for anyone to own an XBOX aside from the average shooters, and poorly done PC ports. It had so much potential, but it all fell apart somewhere. Not unlike Marvel: Rise of the Imperfects.
EDIT: I guess I should say that yes I do own an XBOX. So I'm no fanboy or anything, and yes I feel screwed like a GBA owner. Oh wait.

heres my advice, if you are low on money, sell it for the 360 but do it soon, cuz you know sometime people will be selling them like you can buy a nintendo at a garage sale, itll be the same

See, I don't get this.

We call ourselves game collectors and all, but when a new system comes out half of you are selling your xboxes?

I'd rather keep my Xbox and wait a few extra months on the 360 then get a 360 faster and lose my Xbox. And its not even my favourite of the 3 (I prefer the PS2 to the Xbox :P).

you can always sell it now and buy another one when the price crashes--I did it with my gamecube and x'eye (prices still haven't allowed for the x'eye to be replaced). used xboxes will probably hit the $50-60 range right before the 360 launches. A year later they'll be in the $30 range--after that you'll have to pick them up at the thrift stores in the $6-15 range. It will not be difficult to find them, but you'll probably have to buy two for enough parts to get it working...

also remember that retailers generally buy a system for half what they initially try and sell it for. So right before 360 launch you'll be getting around $25-30.

I don't think many of the people posting in this topic are microsoft fanboys, perhaps it's best to remember this as we stay on topic. we do have other topics for that.

I just picked up another dreamcast for $6. (for a possible NES case project) The going dreamcast rate is $6-15 and it was released 6 years ago--so yes, you will most likely be buying a pile of xboxes. It may take a little longer as xbox's effective lifespan has just ended, where dreamcast's ended somewhere in the 2002, 2003 area.

selling an item and buying it again later is best done with the most common of systems. It also varies by location. But pretty much all common systems bottom out in the $5-15 range. A toaster NES or a PSX will run you about the same price.

As for collections, I always have the "Backup" system that I only use for play. No selling, and no modding. In that collection so far is a NES, and a SNES. The xbox will probably never reach that point. :?

Seriously. I really dislike ps2s, but honestly, I'd rather have a PS2 than an Unmodded xbox. I dont have an xbox to mod myself, nor would I want to.

But to tell the truth, I'd still also rather have a NES than a PS2. Which is sad because the future generations of gamers will never experience the true awesomeness of "older" Systems. (Like actually being the "smart kid" and using your commodore 64, but that was my bro. )

I plan to mod my XBOX, for legal purposes, as in emulate my current games I own. I just hope my brother doesn't chock it with pirated games. He always takes ADVANTAGE of things. :(
