Long Live the PCp Threads!!!!!!!!!1one

I've run into that problem before, tom61. The red mark on a standard IDE cable designated the general position of pin 1 (ussually along one edge). Most motherboards either have a connector with a notch for cable alignment, or a little tiny arrow pointing to pin 1, or pin 1 is flat-out labeled right on the board. And....and....I just realized that I don't know enough about your problem to finish this explanation :?

Are you trying to connect a desktop drive to a 44 pin IDE, through the adapter, or are you trying to connect a 44 pin laptop device to a 40 pin IDE through an adapter?

I'm talking about the adapter itself. No pin one label on it, and no notch on the 44-pin connector to indicate polarity. All I know is that the adapter's label faces the same way as the label on the HD, when connecting a laptop drive to 40 pin desktop IDE.

I suppose that the pin one wire on the 40-pin cable, when plugged into the adapter, would be on the same side as pin 1 of the adapter. The 40-pin socket is keyed, so that can't be plugged in backwards.

However, I'm not really trusting the cheapy IDE adapter (one I bought for $5 shipped, the other came with a $20 IDE to USB kit)

I have plugged IDE cables in incorrectly many times, and never has doing so caused harm to the computer itself. Looking straight at the laptop hard drive pins, with the label facing upwards, the power always goes into the leftmost two or four pins. So long as you follow the PCB traces of the adapter's cord/power connector to the leftmost side of the drive, it should be fine.

You know, I have a special IDE cable on hand which has a 44 pin connector and two 40 pin connectors, allowing a person to plug a laptop drive to a desktop mobo OR vice versa. I can send it to you if you want it, but you would need to figure out how to rig a power connector to the laptop drive (it is reall a 44pin-type 40 pin connector, it just excludes the four power pins). However, I'd appreciate it if you paid the shipping :P

Jesus. I know that ONE of these days I will finally get paid for one of my many auctions, and then I will be able to start my PCp! One of these days! In about 3 days I will have sold ~600-700 dollars worth of stuff, and I should get paid a number of days after that. My plan has (suprisingly) stayed the same: get an Epia TC and use a USB thumb drive.

Why don't you use a controller with analog sticks? If you did is there any way that it could be modded to use the analog stick to controll the mouse?

I am more impressed that the guy built his own motherboard than the size of the board itself. I would love to see someone build an x86 board of a similar size (because then I could bribe the person into making one for me :P )

EDIT:

electromaster64, are you refering to the uPC or that tiny linux board people just recently discovered? JoyToKey can be used to map keys and mouse functionality to USB gamepads of any type, in Windows. Not sure about Linux.

@tom61 - Yeah, like teraflop122 stated, pluging an IDE cable backwards will NOT cause harm to your system. It just won't be recognized by the bios which in return, won't start up.

-> Unless you are like me, and you accidentally plug the power pin portion of the cable into the wrong side of the adapter :D (remembers flaming column of...fire coming off of 44 to 40 pin adapter) But my hard drive still worked after that :o Well...it worked until it had a head crash :?
