Man I hate the school's library computers!

:x I really really hate the computers at the school's library!

1. They're brand-new running Windows XP. But they're crappy Gateways

2. They have disabled the "run" command, the right mouse button, all the Windows games, NOTEPAD, PAINT, WORDPAD, and they all try to run Office setup (which the student accounts cannot do) upon trying to run Word or any other Office app

3. They have all the InfectiveX controls running in Internet Explorer with no apparent way to make them any more secure

4. The refresh rate on the screens is set to something like 60 hz O_o? Color depth is stuck at 16 bit color and they're all 15" CRTs

5. There's 256MB RAM in them all, but they're running Service Pack 2 and tons of other excrement so even if you open a My Computer window it's slower because it goes to the swap file.

When I put my USB thumb drive into the computer, it set it up but half my files disappeared :x and when I tried to "safely remove" it, it said it was "busy" so I punched (literally) the reset button and yanked the drive out.

I'm thinking I should use my D.S.Linux boot CD (I use it on all the classroom PCs, even though they're completely unlocked and I have the admin passwords for them anyways ) and run AbiWord and Firefox from it. Or maybe I should download Portable Firefox and Portable AbiWord?

Anyone know how to get around some of the "security" crap on these things? (tried a .bat file, no dice. :() Or should I just use a boot CD to get them up to a functional level?

In any case, rant about school computers here! :D

On my school computers cmd.exe is disabled, but command.com isn't. So just make a batchfile with "start command.com" in it. Also, if you can get a prompt, run some tskill on all the security crap. A good boot cd cant hurt either. Though one thing id do is to download portable firefox. Then set up a proxy under connection settings. If your having memory key / thumb drive issues, maybe setting everything as read only will help... Overall schools suck!

Can you teach me this, for my school computers are CRAP. They're good, and I want to run Linux on one of them, but the security thing is blocking my access :(

Funny my school doesnt have any security restrictions save for two, they make it impossible to have linux access the internet and they closed the posts for bittorent. But Run, cmd, hell anything else. Even 2 out of the 3 computers I use I login as admin all the time.

Also if you download and watch thebroken you'll learn how to steal the password hash and break it. That way you'll be able to do whatever the hell you please.

if oyu can run word. Then name any exe you need to run winword.exe .
Get a registry editor out of the hidden share often available name admin$ or get it from your home pc. hope to god registry editing is not disabled in group policies. unrestrict all the crap using regedit. haey presto you are in control.

I got red listed (banned from the computers) on friday mostly cause they were already mad at me for copying a sam file stealing a password list and using command line, but the clincher was when I pressed F8 at the bios screen to boot up in safe mode (autromatic admin in novell) and changed my account's permissions.

Ok, now I've got:

-Killbox
-2 batch files (1 for command.com for cmd.exe)
-PortableFirefox
-PortableAbiWord
-PortableOpenOffice

on it.

(I'm already carrying around a couple Linux Live distros and some other random stuff on CDs, might as well have something even more useful!

Any other things I should put on the utility CD?

And how is a proxy set up? (I'm tired of getting blocked from AtariAge because it's a "gaming" site )

My high school's computers just had Bess on them pretty much, which was passable with common knowledge in the school, everything else was okay. Heck, every single one of them, including those belonging to the teachers, had a UT demo on it. For two years high school was one freaking huge LAN party. ^^ I wonder if they're still running those P-MMX 200s...

The next two years I went to a carreer center which had more secure computers, but since we made our own, the lan parties continued, this time with half-life, and we had a small lan where we tried to hack the crap out of each other with Sub Seven. Also, the lan parties against the Cicso Networking class were cool too.

Now, here in college, the computers are pretty much open, at least for most common functions. I suspect that there would be no problem installing games to them, if I wanted to.
