Yeah this is scary, yet oddly fascinating to me. I've always been somewhat of a science nerd, so hearing about this recreation is sort of cool. I think this could certainly be something we can learn from and prepare for future cases of this happening, or something similar. If you read the bottom of that yahoo article, it talks about ways they can use this in a positive way, such as preparing vaccines for possible mutated viruses.

This really is scary as well, though. This was a horrible mutation of a virus that killed millions of people, and we go around posting the genetic sequence of this virus on the internet? Granted, it did take them 8 years to create it and its not likely that someone with evil intent would try and recreate it, as you need an actual sample of the original virus to construct it. You can't just take Adenine and match it to Thymine (or Guanine to cytosene) and do that for the entire genetic sequence; its a lot more complicated than that. Still, the fact that it can be done is somewhat scary. Besides, I'm almost positive that I read somewhere that one of the samples of smallpox that the U.S. keeps in high security areas went missing several years ago, so who's to say that won't happen to this?

It's not creating the virus that's stupid, it's releasing the genetic make-up which is. By creating a virus, they can find a cure for similar viruses, but the cure won't help if they don't know what the problem is early enough. If somebody recreated this in a metropolotin area, it would spread too fast to be controlled in allready over crowded hospitals. Unless they mass produced the cure, they wouldn't have enough to cure everybody.

Nobody that could afford (and go through the trouble) to make this virus would bother with things like holocausts.

I doubt he'd run himself into poverty for this. He's rich, not that rich.
