I can see them recreating the virus, for the sake of scientific research, but I disagree with them posting the genetic sequence publically. I could understand them wanting to share the make-up, but why can't they do it in person. Somebody delivers the files right to the lab that needs them. I do want to see that documentation when it comes out though.

Wasn't it a "high-security U.S. Government laboratory in Atlanta, Georgia" that had one of the mice infected with the black plague, but lost it a couple months ago? Who's to say they wont "lose" this one? Luckily, the mouse that escaped, would have died before it could infect any thing else, but that isn't the case for this one. They need to put a safety on the virus' string, so it can only infect mice. I can't remember what part of the string has to be changed, but I remember that there is a way to limit viruses to a certain species. However, even if they did do that, if the virus got out, it would affect enough mice for the string to mutate back to a point that can affect other animals, including humans.

Okay, I can understand re-creating it for the sake of being immune to it, but don't you think it's still pretty stupid anyway? It killed 50 million and could easily leave the lab. Maybe make a weaker version, make a cure, then go up form there.

I see no stupidity evident in the creation of the virus, though I do find it very ominous. A heck of a lot of scientific endeavors are for no specific purpose besides the pursuet of information, but this virus could to easily be used as a weapon by the US government (as if we don't have enough weapons and power as it is).

Then again, I question the source of that information. We are reading an article from a newspaper written in India, about American scientists working for the American government. Also, scientists still cannot "create" a living cell- they must modify existing life. I find it unlikely that scientists in 1918 could have isolated the genetic makeup of the Spanish Flu, so scientists today can only make guesses as to its nature.

I will believe all of this once I see it in an Brittain or American publication.

(runs away screaming)

Anywho, antisocial people should be fine in the event the virus does get lose. As long as you avoid human contact, it is unlikely to reach you...ok, so none of what I just said was true- just pretend I said something deep and meaningful.

you talk of power. no offense but we made you except for the native americans. I reckon britain (although small) could give the USA a run for its money in a nuclear holocaust.

As long as there is a cure for it, I'm okay with it. I can see how they want to help with it. Otherwise, it's pretty damn scary.
