Nintendo's Next-Gen System

Nintendo have confirmed that the official working title for their Gamecube successor - which had previously been dubbed the N5 - is Revolution. Speaking to investors in Japan, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata also verified that a prototype of the machine will be unveiled for the first time next year, most probably at the annual E3 games show, which next takes place in May 2005.

Iwata, citing fears that competitors would filch their ideas, refused to reveal any firm details on Revolution, other than the fact that it would hook up to both televisions and computer monitors. Predictably, though, he did claim that the console will offer "new ideas" for entertainment. "What we need is not a next-generation machine but a next-generation way of playing games," he said.

In typically vague fashion he added that Revolution would be "of a different nature that does not follow the conventional path of new game systems that increase speed and visual quality for making elaborate games. The rule of satisfying customers by increasing specifications worked once but no longer applies now." However, he did confirm that Nintendo have "no intention of making a two screen console akin to the DS".

Iwata also discussed what he perceives as the current "crisis" facing the games industry being due to too many sequels. This from the man whose company is currently working on Mario Party 6. Speaking of which, it's being reported that the game will not require the use of controllers - which suggests that it may be the first title to make use of the EyeToy-style camera that Ninty are supposedly developing for Gamecube.

Finally, Iwata also spoke briefly of the DS, which he argues is another way in which Nintendo intend to recapture the casual gaming market. "With the launch of the Nintendo DS, we are confident of introducing new fans and bring those light users who have stopped playing games back into the fold."

I wonder why that offered the idea of the N5 hooking up to a monitor? Unless it has a further function in mind then simply gaming.

I also am looking forward to seeing if Nintendo had learned from their mistakes of completely closing off their technology. They've kept it up for over 20 years they need to relalice that their business modle isnt as efficent as it once was.

Just my thoughts.

I just hope it has online play.....I mean, if they're doing it for the DS, why not their consoles, right?
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

Nintendo should just take the development dough for this thing and donate it to charity.

And what is this sequel crap? All Nintendo DOES is fricking sequels!!!! Mario Party 6? Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario 3??????

Oh, maybe they're just jealous their sequels don't sell 5 mil copies a month like Halo 2 or GTA 5. That's probably more like it.

Nintendo.... GROW UP OR DIE!

I hope they really do well with this one. I'd like to have a reason to have a current Nintendo system in my house again.

I wonder if N5 will incorperate a new technology like Sony is doing with the PS3, like the PS3 will use BlueRay discs for games (~50Gb). I'd like to see if Nintendo's beliefe that if they get their console out first they'll get the greater market share like Sony did with the current generation (Dreamcast kind of died about the realease time).

yeah, we shouldn't start that debate stuff again.

In my view, none of the 128-bit consoles are good :P
