NT or 95?

just a reminder that NT doesn't support USB devices, so it might not be the best choice.

it'd be very helpful for mass storage and keyboard purposes. it's not much of a windows machine without them.
but not owning one, I'm not sure PSP has a port capable of usb--but I'd assume it does.

you wouldnt need storage, its got a memory card. i guess you could use it to type, but why would you use the the port as usb, instead of say, ps/2?

If its NT it will support USB. Plug and Play goes back to 95 (though it sucked). Also I dont think you would want to run NT, I've heard that its terribly difficalt to use. Though if you can run NT, Windows 2000 isnt far off.

If its 95. Why use it? 95 sucked and if your going to use it to play games, get Scumm. Its an app that lets you play games like the old Lucas Arts one (Sam 'n Max, DotD, Full Throttle, ect).

If you want more info about the Scumm thing, go here http://OpenAlpha.tv

wouldn't the memory card be usb? I guess I can google the answer to that one. or do they have some kind of shell that windows runs inside that tricks it into thinking the memstick is actual IDE?

I wonder if it could be network booted through the wireless... then all you'd need is a few MB space to start off with. That'd be slick. Does PSP (not in windows) allow for remote file viewing? that'd be handy for watching movies off your hard drive while you're sitting in another room.

spark> NT came out a bit before 95 and has no official USB support. There are a handful of semi-useful 3rd party programs that add some usb function to it, but they are a pain and the good ones cost quite a bit. odd that NT4.0 or any of its later service packs didn't just add it later...

95 and NT don't use much processing power, either. you might be able to run 98SE at least...maybe even 2000.
Warranty-Voiding fun!

2000 will run on as low as 233MHz and 64MB ram. However I have no idea how stable it will be. I know that all the DOS based windows should run fin on 100MHz and about 8MB ram.

Also follow up on the NT thing which version are you talking about? Cause 4.0 is what 2000 and XP are built on top of.

So you are trying to get an iteration of Windows running on a PSP? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that require the PSP processor to emulate x86 compatability? Somehow I doubt that anything above 95 or just MAYBE 98 will run acceptably at all. It would be similar to trying to run Windows 98 on a PDA... :?

The network boot is a neat idea, because Windows 2000 needs quite a huge chunk of space to install.

it does use a x86 emulator, and it does run slow. Some body put mac os on their psp, using a mac emulator for windows. the boot time was FOUR HOURS!

They had the PSP emulating windows, and then the windows emulation iteself emulating Mac OS? Craziness! I'm surprised it booted at all :P

I ran 2000 Server on my old web server with a 133-mhz Cyrix and 64MB ram. It ran great!

A cyrix is an x86 processor. x86 processors make other processors look like midgets (no offense to the midget population). a 624MHz Intel Xscale PDA processor couldn't hold a candle to a 200MHz Pentium. They are simply from different animal kingdoms :P All that makes me wonder whether it will even be worthwhile to try running Windows on the PSP, because the PSP surely wouldn't be able to emulate things like 3D acceleration and etc (unless some genius came up with a driver allowing the Windows emulation to use the PSP's 3D capabilities)- me thinks.

For some people (me included) it's not whether something works well enough to be practical, it's the quest of getting it to work at all. Like, I have hacked a couple CVS one-time-use digital cameras, into something I can reuse. It's not practical, but it was fun and I learned a lot!
