Ways to dump console ROMs
I'm wondering (for a good reason, mind you
) how to dump ROMs directly from the NES, SNES and N64. See, I've looked at those "computer in a game system" things, and the one thing they all lack (besides the fact most of them can't use unmodified controllers) is a way to use the original games you have without illegally downloading them from the internet (because it's still illegal to download them even if you have the game). So, any ways you know of (hopefully they use USB)?

Anyways, I know of interfaces for the nes and snes. The nes one (copynes by KH) requires heavy modification to the nes, the snes one is a simple circuit that connects directly to the PC. Google is your friend, seek and you'll find some

Google was the first place I checked, I guess I didn't search for the right thing because it wasn't very helpful. I typed how to dump NES ROM, and it gave me links to ROM sites, which I don't want, and a whole bunch of other crap. What do you search for to get your results?
Edit: found the copynes, but I don't need the LCD or any of that other junk, there's got to be a simpler and more compact way!

I agree. Your 'ownership' of the title only extends to the medium it was provided on. You may own the NES Maniac Mansion, but it's not the PC Maniac Mansion. While it is certainly 'more legal' to dump your own roms, it's a definate legal gray area that leans more to the black. If you're going to break the law, you might as well just do it the easy way...gannon wrote:In the U.S. it is (in most cases)madc0w wrote:ummm, what he's talking about isnt illegal
I suppose if you copied from, say, n64 cart to n64 cart it would be the 'most legal'. As long as no copy protection had to be circumvented. curse that law. But is a cartridge's unique pinout and building specific hardware for it enough to count as working around copy protection? Any lawyer would probably recommend that you never get into a position where you need to have a court figure that out for you.
Stepping a little farther off topic, what I've never understood is how the Noacs had pretty much unhacked games in them. what loophole made that legal? was the fact that they were combined into a menu-ed rom enough modification to count as their own unique program?
on a side note it's annoying rules and laws such as these that motivate me to purchase my own independant island or deep water oil rig. They're not as expensive as you'd think, starting around $300k for a decent one. All kinds of scams you can pull with your own island... Where I'm at in California, $300k won't even buy you a 2 bedroom, crackerjack house.
If you're talking games like Mario Bros., those aren't legal. Nintendo had a large shipment of NOACs with games that are copy-righted by Nintendo seized, and is tryign to get more cracked down. If you mean ones like the 'Game Station Arcade', those actually have license to the games on them granted by the company that made them (Color Dreams in the Game Station Arcade case).Reaperman@home wrote: Stepping a little farther off topic, what I've never understood is how the Noacs had pretty much unhacked games in them. what loophole made that legal? was the fact that they were combined into a menu-ed rom enough modification to count as their own unique program?

yeah, those pirate noacs were what I was thinking of.
You'd think nintendo would realize their incredible popularity and release *gasp* their own Mario Noac. It would take about $10 of R&D to throw that together... just have it manufactured in the same factory that makes the clones.
of course I've been saying this for years, and realize that I'm wasting breath. Maybe the TV games just aren't big enough in japan. They're HUGE here...
