My second project!!!

Post by xriverfalconx »

My SNESp is just about complete. I need another psone screen to complete it and then I can slip it in its case. Anywho, my second project is going to be the mGENp (Mini-Genesis Portable). I'm using the Streetfighter 2 pad but only using one controller for this project.

I plan on using a hip gear screen with an led mod and I want it to be small as well. I will be adding a cart. slot as well, but I want to be able to play Ghouls 'n' Ghosts which is also on the Radica system.

My first question, how can I set up a small switch so when it's one way, I play the onboard games, and when its in another direction, I play using carts?

Also, did anyone else create a thread explaining what they did step by step?

I can't answer any of you questions (sorry I don't know anything about Radicas), but I don't think the led mod would be necesscary for a hip gear screen. It runs on a pretty low voltage as it is.
play Ghouls 'n' Ghosts which is also on the Radica system.
The Street Fighter Version comes with more than 1 game?! I love Ghouls 'n Ghosts (it's so hard though).

Yuppers!!! It comes with SF2:champion ed. and Ghouls 'n Ghosts!!! I mainly purchased it because of that game. It was hard, but, I've been playing it so much now that it just got easier.

Questions open to anyone still. =)

@ Motoman: Sounds good, thanks!

Hip Gear is on it's way...should arrive some time this week. Same with the cart slot...should be here this week as well.

I was thinking about using a battery charger to power up my mGENp. 4 batteries (from what i see) should be adaquate enough to power up the system long enough, yes? If so, I should be able to hook up the batteries and the charger together w/o problems? If I am correct, what are some good batteries you would recommend?

:::UPDATE:::
-09/28/2005-

Here is how the case is coming along while I wait for ANOTHER hip gear screen.

Image

The power switch is going to be changed soon with a dbdt switch because I like that better and it'll clear out some space as well. Also, I wanna put a different color LED as well. Haven't figured that out yet. Another issue is how to turn on the hip gear and the system at the same time rather than using two switches, however, if I cannot do this, then I'll use two switches.

Image

Fits perfectly between the battery compartments.

Image

Hot glued down and will be covered using original cover from radica machine.

Image

Hole where the cart goes into. The white stuff is just paper that I had left over from the intec screen.

Image

Front view with the broken screen that just lights up for a second then goes away.

Image

Support brackets for the cart slot. Just plastic pieces cut down to help when putting pressure taking the cart out and putting in as well.

Image

It'll fit perfectly, and I just need to make sure that plastic is between it for safety reasons...big bada boom!!!

Image

How the cart looks, from the front, when placed in.

Image

The rear view of the cart in place.

Image

Top view of my baby!

Image

This is what I want it to look like once complete. Still have a way to go but I am ALMOST there. Just need to complete the controller which is another problem because the tacts and the original buttons won't fir together perfectly. Any ideas what I can do for the buttons to work? As for the start and reset buttons on top, that'll stay the way it is...tact switches.

Any comments welcome...feedback, ideas, help...anything. Let me know! =D

Looks good, and as for the buttons you could wire to the original Game Gear control board. After some hacking and tracing I'm sure it would be possible. That way you can use the original elastomers. Maybe if you hollow out one of the original battery packs and glue the cover in place, you can fit the control board for the radica in there and wire it to the hacked up Game Gear board.
As a last resort you can try cutting off some of the top of the tact switches. Although I'm not sure if that works.
One last thing. You might want to use the old start button as the new C button because you will use A a lot and it would be hard to reach A then B during continous play.
EDIT: I forgot to ask but do you think you could post a pic of it next to a Psone screen?

Why are you using the 4AA holder instead of the already built in 6AA holder? If you wanted you could even modify it to be a 4AA, but hip Gear screens will run only for a short time on 6V before the screen goes dark. 6AA's would make it run much better.

I found my solution for the buttons...still working on the d-pad...very close though.

Image

I made the hole for the A button and everything fits PERFECTLY and works great too. Now, time to work on the d-pad.

When I solder the wires onto the tact switch, do I solder all four of the leads together on the pc board then a wire to the control board? or solder everything w/o any of the leads touching and then a wire connects to any one of the leads to the control board?

And here is one with the new hole for the A button:

I prefer the A button there because the games I like, most of them use B and C than A. Example: Revenge of Shinobi, Altered Beast, Ghosts 'n Goblins.

For the tact switches use opposite corners, one for ground, and one for the button. Also, thanks for the Psone comparison. Man the Game Gear is smaller than I remember. I was going to try to cram a Psone screen into a Game Gear (using Gamelver's hack away mod), and remove the screen protector thing (so you could see the whole screen). But oh well.
