Forum Fix 2.0

Post by benheck »

Ok Jones tried another fix for the forums (with the help of my ancient BASIC programming knowledge, don't ask :) and he thinks we'll be up to 150,000 questions (aka queries) an hour.

Please email me and stuff and keep me posted as to whether or not the forum site is up most of the time. Thanks!

-Ben

Yeah we increased the number of php users from 1-3, and it randomly selects one upon a query. It's a workaround, but I guess it means the site is getting more popular.

One of my projects I HOPE to show on G4 TV in 3 weeks, the other is I'm slowly designed my own custom pinball machine, starting with a custom LED display matrix.

My but haven't we been busy?

Sounds like the site navigation system could use an update. (The arcade machine, the MVS console, the MGDp, and the upcoming pinball machine all need a place, you know? ;))

Can't wait to see the pinball table! :)

I figured that could be a fix, but I wasn't sure if you could have multiple users for the same database. (On my server, they only give me a small gui access to the DB, and you can't)

What Jones did was copy the config.php file, open it in Dreamweaver, edit in the code to setup multiple users (which we also had to add in the php control panel) then upload the config back into the php database. It was kind of funny, we had my big computer and like 2 laptops running to do all this - pretty geeky!

Yeah I've been thinking about re-designing the site lately. The Menu bar is nice and clean but it's hard to get an "all at once" snapshot of all the projects and things to see on here. Any ideas?

Well here's how I'd sugest you redesign the navigation system so everything fits:

http://bicostp.gptheatre.co.uk/navtest

I added to the "portable_units.html" page with a "Not-Quite Portables" section, with the MGDp, MVS arcade and MVS console systems in it. (while they are portable, I sugest, for simplicity's sake, that "portable" should only refer to units with built-in screens and power supplies (so MVSp=portable, MDGp doesn't = portable) But that's just me.

I also renamed "portable units" on the navigation bar to "gaming units", to make it a bit more general.

You could add an additional page, but this is not as complicated, and I've already gotten it done. (all that's left to do is make a page for the MS console.)

What do you think?

Also, the old forums should be deleted (maybe add a redirect). You can still get to them by hitting videogames on the toolbar, then forums. Theres constantly 2-3 guests on there. Just replace benheck.com/Games/Videogame Forums.htm with the following code:

Code: Select all

<html>
<head>
<title>benheck.com - Videogame Forums</title>
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" CONTENT="1; URL=../phpBB/index.php">
</head>
</html>

I've been checking on the forums from time to time to see if it's still failing. Looks like everything is going well so far. It seems that the fix is in this time!

yeah I know my site will be gone. BUT the version that's uploaded now is outdated (I've added some stuff) and I won't update it. Nope, not until we get the new doomportables.net up and running with a subdomain name set up. (it will hae some subdomains, right? ;))

In the meantime I can upload it to my old 100webspace account if I feel like it's ready to be posted again.

Also remember my forum, http://bicostp.ezforum.org , will still remain open, and will be the residence of my projects, articles and rantings until the new site is open.

But what will Triton do for now? :shock: Please do tell!

Oh yeah, and I made a backup of the old forums at classicgaming, they're less than 1500 threads there too.
If you want to view all the old topics, go to http://www.gannon.tk/old_forum.html
That just goes to the old forums when you push the button though. I made a script that downloads the topics, then edits out the annoying adds. Eventually I'll probably add some more code for processing every single post into generated pages, but at the moment I'm a bit too lazy :-P

I'm actually working on a redesign for the entire site... with a side panel that lists EVERYTHING and is part of a table (not a frame)

I should put a bit of it up and see what ya'll think...
