Remember virtual boy? that was groundbreaking, but people didnt know what the hell to do with it, so no one bought it. Sure nintendo came back from it, but it certainly didnt help them.

The ds didnt reallyhurt nintendo all too much, cause a lot of people bought it. Also, the word is still out on the micro, but with 2 other handhelds with good graphics, why buy a newer GBA?

I agree with you, Luc. If Nintendo really wants to make ground-breaking hardware, they should come up with something that isn't a gimmick. For example, it would be great if they could come up with a way to have true 3D, like Sega did with the glasses or the iMax glasses. (None of that blue-red lens BS, it looks like turd.)
But waving your arms around in front of sensors makes you tired and makes you look like an idiot. That's why I despise DDR, because it makes you "dance" like a psycho.
And for the matter of why they made the GBM: because they could. They had the resources, and it's so effing cheap to produce that they'd earn a high profit margin. Any way tomake a quick buck. However, I won't buy one anytime soon, mainly because of its size. I can't comfortably hold something that small for extended periods of time. (I tried holding a Plen-T-Pak of gum like the GBM, my hands cramped up)
If they're going to try ground breaking innoative hardware, they should makle something good that people will know how to use right out of the box. I know they plan on making a ridiculous number of addons for the stock controller, but if your controller base dies then you're screwed. You can't just put down your gamepad and pick up your light gun, because they're one and the same. They should make regular controllers AND the new ones, maybe sell the regular ones seperately. Or at LEAST make a decent cardle to convert the new controllers into more traditional controllers.
Nevertheless, I believe if Nintendo keeps forging ahead down the road they're on, it's not going to help them much. (if at all.) It might een hurt them a bit.
And besides, if I could play the latest Mario or Zelda or Metroid games on the 360, then I'd buy the 360. Proprietary software is, in my opinion, the only thing bringing the majority of players back to Nintendo hardware.
Just my $0.02

Except hat, you know, DDR was a HUGE F'ING SUCCESS.Lucretius wrote:Goodness, this got nutty whilst I was a-learning at school! Time to get my list on!
1. Change is constant. The only things you can count on is change, death and taxes. Since most of you are a little too young to make heads or tales of the last two, I'll focus on change.
I don't think there is one member of this board that doesn't like change. Why? Because nothing is perfect, and few things are even good. There's a;ways room for improvment. The idea is to make GOOD change, and a virtual reality stick (not new, sorry to burt yer bubbles) is a poor change. It really is. You asked when was the last time I actually wanted to smack the shoit out of my enemies. I'll tell you.
Every time. And I do. I beat them soundly. Hence I'm a gamer. Not to poke fun at anyone here, but how many of you really want to get uber active while your playing a video game? It's the same reason DDR sucks.
You're kidding me right? This isn't a stairmaster for crying out loud. Its not really any more active then, say, a lightgun. Now I'm sure this stick is gonna be a hit in japan, but they're all nutty in a fun way pver there. I'm simply saying (regardless of what I like or don't like about the system) it won't do well here. In America. Or Canada, or Australia, or Europe, or anywhere else OTHER than Japan. Period. No one in their right mind would spend THAT much money on a gimmick to get people active while they play VGs when you can just go out and, dare I say, be active! Ride a bike, play soccer.
The gamecube was poorly managed? What makes you think that? Sure, it didn't sell that well, but it still beat out the X-Box worldwide (IIRC). Nintendo just didn't play the pissing game and try to measure dicks with the Sony and MS, because it didn't need to to make a profit. Sony and MS had to sell their consoles at a loss to move them, Nintedo didn't. As a result, so it would seem, Nintendo made a huge profit. MS, by the way, lost money in their games division.2. I don't like Sony. I kinda like MS. I like Nintendo. But the gamecube was porrly managed, and the NR is a waste of time and money.
Plotful? No, Nintendo isn't making any movies with super-linear game-like interactive intermissions, they leave that to Square. And Nintendo definatly isn't playing they graphics game, because thats not what their niche wants. Their niche wants innovation. They want new experiences. And Nintendo is giving them that.I hate sony, so I won't even go there. That leaves the xBox. It isn't a bad system and is, sadly enough, the best one out there right now. Graphics, my naive young boy, is a very important deal right now. People want some rockin' graphics. Personally, I don't. I want good plotful games. Nintendo isn't giving us any of those.
No commercialization? What the hell is that even supposed mean? And I'd hardly call anything Nintendo put out for the GC half assed... except maybe Echos. They're dishing out unsupported hardware with half-assed games and no commercialization. I am no fanboy, because I am no fan of the current companies.
Thats not innovation. Thats the same old crap, only now its in portable form!3. You say you want innovation> Well so do I. I'd like to have a laptop that could fit in my pocket and still play HALO.
And I'm sure you have a better one? I think Nintendo has hit solid gold with this idea. I personally wouldn't have thought of it.I want a car that can fly me were I'm going. I want a toothbrush that brushes for me. Nintendo has the right idea of innovating the VG industry. Unfortunately, they have only come up with pathetic ideas.
They did. It was the GC controller. Which you can use with the Revolution. If they could make the best feeling controller
They ARE rolling in it. They are the most profitable console manufacturer BY FAR. And part of that is that they don't make outrageoously expensive systems and then sell them at a loss hoping to recoup the money on games. If they had made the GC the most powerfull system on the market, what would it have gotten them? They still don't have that "hardcore" image and they don't want it either. So they would only have wasted money.the fastest processor, the highest bit-rate, they'd be rolling in it.
Oh yeah. They're doing a lot of suffering. I mean, for the last year they've been losing money like crazy! Oh.. no wait..:But they have some dumb idea that people want gimmicks and will always want them. People don't, and Nintendo will suffer for their mistakes.

The difference, of course, is that Nintendo is still raking in tons of money. And they've been trying this innovation stuff since... well, forever. Hell, theire very first system invented the D-Pad!GBP, PS, VR, N64DD, GC, NDS, GBM, and now the NR will be recognized as the steps Nintendo took to become the new Atari.
Nintendo isn't making excrement games. Not by a longshot.Think about it. What did atari do? They made excrement games and produced too much "ground breaking hardware". You think this is all a coincidence? Not a fat chance.
Let me sum this up:
You can hate the Rev. controller. You're welcome to your opinion that its a bad idea. You can even hat Nintendo and their games. And you'd probably be right if you said that the Revolution won't dominate the console market. But saying that it will be Nintendo's downfall is absolutely rediculous.
---
So what would you suggest this controller look like, so that a person who never used a controller in their life might feel comfortable with its use... hmmm... lets see... if only there was a device that was roughly controller shaped that people used all the time with their TVs, then we could just make it look like that and it'd be instantly familiar to everybody! But no, instead they made it look like a remote. What were they thinking? If they're going to try ground breaking innoative hardware, they should makle something good that people will know how to use right out of the box.

you know, you're right. The Revolution isn't for those who like to be lazy when playing games, who get stimulated by graphics, who hump Halo, or who dish it out for all of those reasons you just listed. Nicer put. I don't think that Nintendo was aiming for your demographic at all. Anyone can make hardware and software for a demographic like that. I think Nintendo wanted to make the Revolution for different people than that. Sony is finally making something for their demographic, Microsoft obviously has theirs, and Nintendo is definitely aiming for a completely different demographic. And until everyone finally gets that...I think this topic should be locked, it is just a stupid oppinion war. No one will win, and i think that is Nintendo's whole point in making the stupid thing.Lucretius wrote:Goodness, this got nutty whilst I was a-learning at school! Time to get my list on!

*sigh*....I can't say I'm surprised, though....I knew that whatever the rev. controller would be, it would be controversial....and all I have to say is this: games. it all depends on the games. if nintendo can come up with awesome games for this type of controller, then great, it's a good idea and rev. games will be awesome. if not, then I'll still buy the rev. because it's the portablizer's dream, with NES, SNES, N64, and GC capabilities...
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

Hey! Let's all sign a petition to stop nintendo from trying to bring a unique gaming experience to the world.
Dear Nintendo,
Please release more of the same old stuff, like everybody else is, so nobody chooses to play your system. Your system is too weird and scary.
Signed:

xxxxx xxxxxxxx
I mean really, on GBM nintendo gets slammed for releasing the same old stuff, and on revolution they get slammed for putting something out that's too far from primetime. can they actually win with people, or is nintendo just the company that gets dumped on, no matter what?
I'll buy one just because it's different from the entire closet full of 'same old' systems that I have.

People fear change.. People probably freaked out about the D-Pad.. and then they probably freaked out about the N64 analog stick.. which BTW< was another Nintendo first right? When the N64 came out I hated the controller with a passion.. but after I tried it I got used to it and it made sense.. People probably said the same thing back then.. "That controller sucks.. I'm not buying that..etc" but IMO the biggest failure of the N64 was lack of CD drive and lack of games.. Like a said.. people fear change and dont want to take time to learn something new even if its better in the long run..switch from D-pad to analog took getting used to.. switching from mouse to trackball took getting used to.. but everytime I'm glad a did it and would never go back. Why do you think so many people STILL have VHS instead of DVD or still have tapes instead of CDs? because they are better? NO..
And dont think I"m a Nintendo fanboy because I'm not.. Nintendo has done plenty of stupid things and isnt perfect.. but people need to realize that Nintendo is aiming for a different demographic here.. most likely non-gamers, casual gamers, young children.. everybody that Sony and MS arent catering to..which makes good business sense because then there is no competition then.. If the revolution comes out for under $200, plays retro Nintendo games (For free) plus DVDs it will be a huge hit just from that.. Nintendo knows that tons of people are pirating their old games so if they release them all for free in order to sell the NR like hotcakes its no loss.. Then the Revolution is in every household like the NES used to be.
