When you have a router you have two sockets "lan" and "wan". Lan is local area network, computers that are connected to each other physicaly. Wan is the internet, and as I see it when you host a game and the person is not connected to you lan network its wan then.

I'm in the process of getting CCNA certified, so I will explain this one.
LAN operates within a limited geography. With Cat5 it is possible to run a lan up to 2km. A standard ethernet cable can only transmit 500 meters before signal degradation occurs, but with the use of multi-port repeaters you can extend this length another 500 meters. You can only use up to 4 repeaters before late collisions occur and the signal becomes too attenuated.
WAN runs on things like fiber optic cable, or Cat5e and Cat6, can transmit several kilometers without the use of repeaters to transmit data.

http://www.techimo.com/newsapp/i11932.htmlThe November issue of PC Gamer Magazine will feature a ten page preview of Quake 4. For those not in the know, this first person shooter is based upon the Doom 3 rendering engine, but Raven designed the actual game content instead of id Software. The issue should reach newsstands nationwide on September 21st.
