Upgrading my computer. Need Help With Mobo.

Well, I'm not really new at upgrading computer components like HD's and drives, I'm a total n00b at replacing my mobo and cpu. I have a new motherboard already, it's a foxconn 875A02. My question is, what info do i need to know to find out why it won't work with my processor? (I have an intel pentium 4 2.66 ghz processor brand new.)
EDIT: the processor doesn't fit into the socket on the mobo.

well you have to find out the socket, it may be for a celeron or an amd, check in the manual or on the website

it says its compatible with intel pentium 4 socket 478 (willamette/northwood/prescott) processors, as well as Intel celron socket 478 (wilamette/northwood) processors.
and FSB of 400/533/800 mhz.

it means your processor doesnt fit in your mobo, its the wrong socket type, so it doesnt fit, you need one with the same socket type

you could sell the processor and try to make some money off it to buy a new processor

P4 covered 3 differnt socket types 478 is a P4/celeron coekt...P4's and Celerons do not have different pin numbers/arrangements

the 3 socket types are 428 (oldest) 478(middle) 755(newest)....755 doesent have pins on the processor but pins (in a secne) in the socket....really really dumb if you ask me, the socket could devlop a gap or be defective in some way and your processor could move one way or another shoting it out and rendering it useless...not LAN friendly

He's totally right, just count and see if it really does have 478 pins (which is better than plopping down lots of $$$ IMHO).

yah, it's got the little pads. on the box for the p4 it says lga 755. I got it from newegg, so i can return the mobo but will have to pay a 15% restocking fee.
the prod code on the p4 is BX80547PE2667ESL7YU, if you want to know.
If you go on the intel 'site, any processor lower than 2.80 ghz isn't made the 775 type. http://www.intel.com/products/processor ... /index.htm

EDIT: seems the intel pentium 4 processor 505 is in the 755-land package. It's the last one.

can anyone reccomend a motherboard i should buy as a replacement? I'm looking for ATX form factor, at least four pci slots, doesnt need onboard video or audio (or lan), and it needs to be compatible with my p4.
