Ive had braces for WAAY too long. The changes dont hurt anymore. Every month I go back and they just do random new stuff.

Trust me, Its going to hurt. Its not horrible, but it will hurt. Ive just stuck it out. Sometimes I had the inability to even chew, though some people have never felt like that. Dont worry, When they put them on, It dosent hurt but it will about an hour later. Theyll give you wax to make shure you dont get poked, And its annoying when it does.

Have fun! It may hurt but you will probably appreciate your straightened teeth.

I have braces they're not too bad anyone can handle it you should be fine its just a pain in the ass when they put a chain on that starts out as being 3/4 of an inch and stretches it out across like 6 teeth.

If I ever needed braces id get those new plastic kind. The dentist makes a mold of your teeth, top and bottom. Then this company makes something like 60+ diffrent clear plastic outlines and each week you put a new one in and they stratin out your teeth, mind you they prolly cost like $2000 because all 60 are custom made to be slightly diffrent.

Yeah, spacers are a pain in the butt too. Don't worry, you'll get used to the arranging of your teeth after awhile, and it really is worth it in the end. Yeah, there's some pain at the beginning, but its not too bad after that. Just try not to get hit in the mouth with a baseball like I did...ouch. Just kidding. Okay, I'm going to stop freaking you out and just say that it really isn't too bad.

I wont get my braces off for another year. The braces didn't hurt at all to me...but the spacers hurt like hell. It dosn't hurt to get the bands changed...unless your like me and get the "new girl" all the time and she always "slips" when trying to take them off.

Ouch! :( I'm glad I don't need em. I feel for ya.
My sis almost had to get them. Instead she got this mouth guard looking thing from a dentist. She put it on at night for several months and her teeth straightened! It was kinda amazing, cause this rubber mouth guard thing was kinda crappy looking. You might want to look into that if your teeth are not too out of shape.

Those clear plastic ones are pretty cool. I know a few kids with them, and they really like them. They are called Invisalign I think. Pretty pricey though.

I had braces, I hated it, then I was done, and I got this bar spanding the bottom 3, and now top and bottom retainers (I still have the bar), and the bottom costs more than the top one just because it has a hole!

I agree with G-Prime. The spacers sucked worse than anything else because it's the first thing they put you through. Second to that I guess would be re-learning how to play the trombone with braces on... Thank God for wax.

I just got mine off in January, but when they first put them on in 2002, DAMN those spacers hurt. The aide made sure to pull them all the way down to slam into my gums before putting them in place. Finally, once they had stopped hurting, I had to get braces which took some getting used to. My gums got irritated during the first 2 weeks and I couldn't chew at all (they did one row of my mouth at a time, so only my top teeth were sore). When they saw this, they were happy to bend the hooks to hurt less. After awhile, I got the braces for my bottom teeth and only could chew with my top ones. After it all was comfortable, I was ok. Then there were the rubber bands, which weren't painful, but annoying for awhile. Switched them to night wear, then was done with them. Then, I found out that they still needed to put more bands on (the ones on the teeth at the very back of my mouth). This hurt like hell for about 3 weeks (and the wires made new wounds in my cheeks). I learned by this to always slightly inflate my cheeks before biting down, otherwise they would crush my cheeks painfully. I got rubber bands again, this time the heavy gauge ones. Switched to night wear, then none. I had a chain only once, mainly because my teeth had too little room between them instead of too much. Finally, I got them off! One week of bliss with nothing on my teeth. If I could get the pictures, I would. I got retainers, which aren't so bad. Now I'm on night wear with them until November (and have been since January).

Things to think about:

• they will hurt slightly whenever the bands are changed
• if the person is hurting you with one of the tools, tell them and they'll try to make it less painful
• don't chew gum
