is solid state pc possible?

i have been wanting to install an mp3 player into my car using a pc. does anybody know if i could get something that would replace a hard drive with solid state memory?

To be truthfull. If you have a car-pc you may as well put a 60-100 gig drive in. It's not like your gonna be carrying it around in your pocket.

ya i know i could just use a hard drive, the only problem with that is that i need some huge shock absorbers just for the hard drive. that is why i was aiming for solid state.

you can just use a CF to IDE adaptor. Or buy a mobo that has the CF-IDE already onboard (I saw one like that once a couple years ago)

Seriously though, CF cards are WAAAY more expensive than hard drives, making an 80 GB RAID 0 array of CF cards (to equal a hard drive, using IDE enclosures or something) would cost over $16,000, whereas a hard drive of the same capacity costs less than $100

A slim linux and some mp3's perhaps. But some external HDs are pretty shock resistant, if you can do without a CF boot, I would. and don't even think of xp on cf...I can't even imagine how slow that would boot. and the swapfile speed...oi!...

Actually a used PPC is a better choice all together--they run as low as $60 used and are plenty fast. good voice recognition software too

HDs are very shock resistant anyway, unlike CDs the disks are bolted to the spinning colum of the reader making it almost imposible to shake them very hard, and seriously, how bumpy are the reads where you live? The ones here in good old pot hole city Nova Scotia (seriously the roads look like swiss chease) are fine for my Laptop computer.

Also, the music won't skip like a CD because it will be playing from RAM when the song is loaded.

I did see something a while ago that was a PCI card that took SDRAM sticks and used an IDE interface like a hard drive. I don't remember who made it but it was very expensive and had a limit of like 8 gigs.

EDIT: Found it, it was called the Platypus QikDRIVE8. I think the company that made them went out of business. It was a good idea, but wasn't affordable or practicle. Cost was $3000-5000 depending on amount storage.

Another Edit: http://www.cenatek.com/ makes somthing like it but the cost is $1500 2GB, $3000 4GB.

You would be better off with a laptop hard drive, they are more shock resistant than desktop hard drives.

The Laptop HD-2-PC converter wires run somewhere around $30-$40 and yes the laptop HDs are more shock resistant.

If you mean a 2.5" => 3.5" hard drive adapter then you need to look around.

As for the system. If you going to have less then 2 gigs of mp3s then yes you can do it as Compactflash card that are 1 gig are now like $60. Otherwise you'll be selling your body off to pay for the flash memory.

As for those of you that say hard drives are good enough. It might be the fact Michigan has the worst road in the country but I'd rather have a solid-state computer without anymoving parts (maybe a DVD player) so I dont have to worry about scratching the hard drive if I hit a pot hole (chance is like 50:1 maybe less).
