I was looking at the thread on hack-a-day about in car computers and that got me thinking about voice recognition software. I found a sweet program called e-Speaking Lite. It has a full list of commands on startup and with the full version you can add your own commands. The best part I find is you can set it to accsept commands all the time, when you press a button, or if you say the word "computer" (star treak fan here lol) it will respond with "yes" (or anything else you want it to say its compleetly customizable.

It can't type for you, but its fun to screw around with. I'm gonna get Dragon V8. It can type for you with a 99% accuracy (found my new way to type essays, TV + computer + microphone = no time wasted

) plus you can set all the normal commands.

I tried Dragon once, it sucked for me.
Of course that could be because I didn't have a mic at the time and was using an old speaker instead

man i want to try building a carPC for my oldsmobile, that would rock so hard! and with voice recognition and the voice of HAL9000 for 2001 a space odessy

hahaha, Dragon with a good microphone and a week or so of use can get up to a 99% compitency. It learns from its mistakes, and theres a video of a guy using it. He had been using the program for 2 years and he had to talk about double his normal speed and slir his words for the program to screw up.

For my car project im gonna use a old 750 mhz laptop that has a broken screen, a cheep USB GPS unit, a FM transmitter, one of those plug in car power adapters and the speach recognition software.

The program says Hello when you say Hello into the microphone. I could see me getting pulled over, I turn off the music, the cop walks up, says "Hello" and my car says "Hi" back.

I'm working on a carputer myself, though the thing is being a pain in the butt (quirky BIOS, no GUI working)

If I can get a really cheep screen (No smaller than 5", prolly get a PSOne, since its cheep) then ill be able to run a GPS program, They have some good 7" VGA stuff but its like $200 CDN.

Well since im really board I made this cheep drawing in Paint.

The PC is housed in a locked (YES!!!) box that is under the seat. The green wire is a microphone on the stearing colum that picks up my commands. Blue is a wireless FM transmitter that lets me lissen to MP3s (tape decks suck and I don't want to mod my car... seeing as its not even mine. Everything needs to be removed at some point or another.) Yellow is a cheep ass Canadian Tire converter that has a max of 75 watts. Luckily my laptop that im useing is like 300 years old and only pulls 30 watts max

. Anyways, finaly the red thingy is a screen, most likly at this point in time off my PSp (Ill add some connecters and a velcro strap so it can be removed for storage, I still want to be able to use my PSP ^.^) Ill have voice recognition to controll the pc (the program mentiond above even alows you to move the mouse with your voice O.o;) and a bunch of games, MP3s movies and other junk for my friends to fool around with.

And that ends my rant.

In MacAddict magazine a few years ago (well, 6 years ago...) They told you how to wire up voice-recognition lights and fans using a wireless microphone, a few x10 (or something like that) lamp control units, a transmaiier unit, and a Power Macintosh running Apple's Speech Recognition software, which came out in 1996.

Believe it or not, it's actually pretty accurate at voice recognition, and the voices that come in it are beyond compare to Microsoft Sam.

I've never made a voice-controlled lamp system, but I have used the software before.

They have a bunch of voice upgrades, but they are like $5.
