So what if my 1st project failed miserably!
I'm getting back on the horse! That's right my 1st attempt at creating the atari 2600 project from ben's book failed miserably. Hopefully Turbo_Tax_1.0 is rescuing that proj.
In the mean time I'm determined to complete a project. So I've set my sights a bit lower. I want to creat a AOAC, proj. Even though It seems a bit cheesy, I think it will be a good confidence builder.
Here is what I've done so far

My main question now is (I'm going to order a hip gear screen pad very soon), (1) Can I wire the joystick from the hip gear to this unit, and if so (2)How do I do that. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Im pretty shure you would want to make your own, but connect each of the buttons, (button, left, right, up, down) and connect the wires similar to the one that was inside.
Im pretty shure it works that One end goes to ground and the other goes to the appropriate button pin/trace. You would have to look at the ATARI you have and trace the lines.

Well, if you are asking to use one of the analog sticks from the hip gear, it's possible and easy. Grab a few resistors from RadioShack (4.7k ohm work, try values near them as well), and make sure they are the 1/4 watt ones, they don't carry much power so they don't need to be big. Desolder the stick and you will notice (if it is a PS2 or Xbox) a 4-pin tact switch at the top, one small potentiometer to the left or right and another one at the bottom. The tact switch can be the trigger for the system, so if you want, solder wires to diagonal leads of the switch and connect them to the trigger switch. To wire up the directions, first solder a resistor from one of the outer pins of each pot to the middle pin of the pot. This is where you must find the ground on your AOAC. Solder the middle pin of each pot to the ground of the controls, then solder the directional wires (the pot on the side, either left or right, holds the up and down directions and the pot on the bottom holds the left and right directions) to their correct places on the board. Check that the wires for the stick don't connect to ground (you can use a multimeter to check which side of the pad connects to ground on the board). When you have it all done, plug the Atari into a TV and check that the directions work. If they don't, check which one isn't working and switch where the wire is connected on the board. If they all don't work, I probably can't help ya here, sorry.

They'll play the built in games, no problem. They just won't work with real carts.

Put simply we prefer to use the real deal as aposed to a emulator on limited hardware. That is why we don't talk about the 10 in 1 PnP joysticks.
