To fix the mouse problem go into the controll panel and go to mouse options click the hardware tab and then set it up for your mouse if it doesent have your mouse under there than you'll need to find the disk for it with the drivers or download them from the internet.

I considered bringing that simple fact up, but I didn't want to be called an idiot for not realizing he could just plug in another mouse (possibly to the MOUSE port instead of the USB port (if that is, in fact, the problem)

Try using a USB mouse with the PS/2 mouse plugged in.

If that doesn't work, tryt just the USB mouse.

If that doesn't work, you can probably buy a serial mouse at RipoffShack.

doesn't XP make you register and if there's 2 computers with the same copy of XP, they come to your house and beat you up and catch the house on fire or something like that?

Just do a google search for Windows 2000 drivers for whatever model of mouse you have. Then download and install the driver and it should work. BTW you can use the keyboard to do that. Use Tab and/or the arrow keys to move from item to item, and Enter to click things.
