VCS Cartridge-turned-modular expansion?

Post by bicostp »

This doesn't have much to do with building a portable VCS, but it fits here better than F42.

I'm planning on adding a modular expansion port to my psonep, so I can connect cartridges with a GOAC or a NOAC processor that use the existing controller and screen. I was planning on using gutted VCS cartridges for this, because I already have an old 5.25" floppy cable. I just have a couple questions about it:

1.How many pins do the cartridges have on them?

2. How well does the floppy connector perform as a cartridge slot?

3. Does this sound like a good idea?

Thanks in adavnce for the help.

Well, your NOAC idea won't work, it needs over 70 pins for cartridge, audio, video, power and controller, and the Atari cartridges only have 24 or so. The GOAC has over 24 pins on the cartridges, so that won't work either. If you're not having the cartridge data come through it, you'll be fine, there are only 7 or so pins to connect otherwise (not including a player 2 port).

I'm not using the floppy connector as the cartridge slot, I just plan on using it as a modular interface to the controller, battery, and screen. The cartridge would have another cartridge connector on it for the Genesis or NES carts. (to tell the truth I wasn't planning on adding cartridge slots to the expansion carts)

I might post a diagram later.
