turning tv on its side

i want to play ikaruga in full screen mode on my 32" sony flatscreen, but im not sure whever turning it on its side is safe.

when i turned it the green writing on the screen went blue and there was massive discoloration to the picture, i quickly turned back before anythign was permantly damaged and it was fine.

why did it do this? and is it safe to put a televison on its side?

What kind of tv was it. If it was a crt, the discoloration (spelling?) could be due to a nearby magnet.

it is indeed a crt.

could this discoloration become permenant at all?

if a magnet then yes. but all crt's go a bit weird if lifted upside down i think.

ive found that the color change from green to blue, is at a regular gradiant as you turn the tele. it swaps over at about 50degrees either way.

i dont think its magnets. under the tv in the stand is a ps2, a dreamcast, further below a DVD player and a video machine. other than that there is nothign which could have magnets in close to the tv.

and i dont think the magnets in those devices are anywhere near strong enough to effect the whole picture.

it seems like about half of the CRTs out there do this. I wouldn't worry about it too much if you did it once for a bit. Maybe if you did for a week, but not temporarily

I tried that once for mame, I don't think there is supposed to be pressure on that side of the screen. I think that is why you have to stand one up on its back and look down at it.

you could always open it up and rotate the yoke.

dont have a clue what a yoke is, sounds complicated.

It could have something to do with the natural magnetism of the Earth bending the electron beams. The new TV in my living room has a feature to counterbalance this (as if it's a normal problem?) Anyways, just a thought.
