what's in these?
i'm making an AC adapter for my pocket TV but i don't know how to open the TV so i plan on modding some dead batteries like this. but i don't know if what's in a dead battery is toxic or dangerous or anything. i know live batteries are but what about dead? and speaking of what's inside stuff, is whatever's in ICs and resistors and stuff toxic? i get most of my switches and plugs and stuff by chopping up old pcbs but there's always resistors and stuff in the way so i have to cut around them, which is very annoying. would it be OK to just cut right through them?

its common sence here, when a battery is used up it doesent lose its acidicy it loses it electrical charge.
why do you think it costs so much to get rid of car batteries? the acid in there doesent break down into a salt and water when its done with its electrical charge.

There are chemicals in the batteries that could cause some minor burns when exposed to skin. To honestly tell you, i would never advise taking apart a battery. Im sure you an come up with a better soloution. Perhaps you can use a steel bolt that the same size of a battery and wedge it in where it has to go.
Circuit boards and crap so have some "not nice" chemicals, but nothing to be to worried about. Unless you are using a dremel or similar tool to chew through these boards, and you are directly spewing the dust right into your face, you shouldnt have much to worry about. Just dont eat any of the parts, they might hurt a little bit on the way out.
PCBs (Printed CIrcuit Boards) are made from fiberglass, which can cause skin irratation if it gets in your pores, and even irratate your lungs and eyes. Try not to spew PCB dust in your face. ICs, Regulators, and transistors are mostly silicone, germanium, and other crap i cant think of right now. Generally safe, unless you eat a bag of them. Resistors are mostly carbon. Again safe to handle the dust and bashed up parts, but dont eat them. Diodes are silicone and Germanium, again, safe to handle broken bits, and dont eat em'. Capactiors are usually made of aluminum and formica (empty air, or cardboard.) safe to handle, but dont eat.
Batteries are real bad. I wouldnt take them apart, burn them, or overcharge (or attempt to charge alkalines). Use em, when they go bad toss em'.
Its pretty safe to say u can handle almost all modern electronics, just dont eat any of it. And honestly, it would probabbly do more damage physically by slicing your innards before it did any kind of chemical poisining.

mercury switches are impossible to find in modern electronics. Like i said before, get a bolt thats got a round "acorn" style head and make something to wedge into the space the battery goes. Tell me the kind of batteries, and how many, ill draw you a pic of how to do this... its easier to see that read...
get a bolt that has either an acorn, or round flat head and has the same diameter as a battery. Put a nut on the bottom. You will need 2 of these. To keep them in place, you can make some plastic spacers from some empty plastic laundry detergent bottles. make some plastic strips, and drill a hole in the diameter of the bolt on each side of the bracers, use nuts (and washers) to hold the spacer brackets in place.

hmm.. maybe ALKALINES? alkalines are bases. theyre relatively neutral on the pH scale and wont cause any harm unless you eat em. (durr, why would you do that anyway?)
theres nothing dangerous in electrical components unless youre talking about old temperature sensors or tilt switches which contain mercury.
the only batteries that actually contain a harmful acid is lead acid batteries. so dont worry yourself.

Well, the battery split open and came in contact with a metal. I dont know exactly what kind of metal, but it probabbly caused a chemical reaction that caused a byproduct that irratated/burned my skin. But still, opening a battery usually isnt a good idea. Allthough the inside of 9V's are intresting.
