Making an mp3 player

If you can do surface mount soldering (unlike me), Ladyada's minty is probably best, plus it allows you to use whatever CF card you have to run it (well, and up to however large FAT16 supports).

I think FAT16 can support up to 2 gigs, FAT32 supports something like 160 gigs, not too sure about HFS and HFS+.

The old MFS of the Maciintosh System 1.0-3.0 didn't support subdirectories. You could not make a new folder, but there was always an empty folder on each volume that got replaced if you aded things to or renamed the existing one. Only when they switched to HFS (hierchial file system) did folders really mean anything. and I think it only supported volumes up to 20 megs... or 40...

i was searching for abit about this and i heard this this board called like a butterfly board or something and u can program it to run like an mp3 and it only cost like $30 but them u have to buy the storgae hookups and stuff

I'm not exactly sure what you mean but you seem to be asking if you can make a mini computer (I suppose you mean a gumstix?) that is also an mp3 player and uses a hard drive to store data? Basically, you seem to be asking for an iPod. If this is not true, you seem to be asking for an mp3 player that uses a hard drive. In that case, Ladyada's minty can use hard drives, just get microdrive that will fit in a CF slot (not much point in a bigger one, it only supports 2 GB).
