Avatar woes....

Post by Lucretius »

Remember when deamonfaj had that screenshot of an avatar/ Remember how annoying that was? Well there's a newer problem, and it's a little more serious.

I'm not going to beat around the bush, Triton and G-Prime have avatars or sigs that are waaaaaaaay to big, and take waaaaaay too much out of some people's computers to load, including mine. It's caused error's, freezings, and hurricanes! Why am I making this public? Couldn't I have just pmed the two and be done with it? Yes, but want to discourage these avatars publicly. They're murder on small compys, and dial-up losers...

Ok, well is mine ok (I know it is rotating, but they're less than 20K apiece)? If it NEEDS to be a single avatar, I know which one to choose, but I really like my rotating thing.

I understand the feelings of anger from dialup users towards people with big avatars and stuff, I was once one of them. At one point, I'd click a web page and go get a snack, or play a level in a game while waiting for it to load. I take speed for granted now…

It's a PHP script. If you browse http://www.metroid2002.com/usbcd36/Avatars/, it is the file called "usbcd36.jpg". It MUST be hosted in the same directory as the image files that it will rotate. The source code came from Nate, the webmaster there. It resides in http://nate.metroid2002.com/avatars/avatar.txt, but renaming that with a ".jpg" won't do anything, you must add a few lines of text to your .htaccess file (there should already be one in your main directory) to force the type as PHP script, even though it is named as a JPEG. The code is:

Code: Select all

<Files avatar.jpg>
ForceType application/x-httpd-php
</Files>
. Also remember to change "avatar.jpg" to the actual name of your random PHP script)

After that, upload the .htaccess file (you should turn on invisible items, but if your FTP client can't do that, upload it as something like ht.htaccess and rename inside the FTP client.
