OS X on x86! It works!

Its how to install osx on a x86 box. In fact im posting from my osx'd dell pc right now. Very cool.

About the only thing that was needed to make Mac OS X work on an x86 system was aqua and quartz. Of those I think both could possibly not be affected by the platform. So really making that port would have taken Apple a few months if that.

And if anyone wants to argue the point look on apple.com they offer Darwin for free download and and x86 version is kept up to date with the PPC one. They might not have had imediate plans to start selling Mac OS X on x86, but they kept the idea around incase they choose to do it.

Having OS X on your PC is stupid. If it gets fuxed up, Apple won't help you or anything.

Wow and considering the fact that its built on BSD (most stable OS there is) and that there are large communities of people willing to help I dont think you need Apple.

Besides who goes to tech support for help with their computer? The smart people go to people that have first hand experiance and not some fool behind a desk that talks you through it from a manual.

Not just that, but warranty and the like. If you bought Tiger and ran it on your PC, if something scrws you over somehow, you get no tech support, and your warranty is voided, among other things. OS X is meant to only run on Apple hardware.

Not to mention speed. There are OS hacks for PSP, and they still run slow. Mac OS X is a lot more powerful. It just won't run well off Apple hardware.

If you like Macs you'd really just want to support Apple and buy a Mac Mini or something anyway.

HK-47, how fast is your computer and how much memory do you have?

I might be able to try this if I can scrounge up the appropriate parts from the garage...

Sure, Apple's not going to help you if you screw up your installation, but who actually calls tech support anyways? They're just looking at the same information that's avalible to you if you went to the website and/or user groups.

I found a PowerMac G3 in the trash. I learn'd all my computer skilles from trashed PCs, but never got into macs. I just never got my hands on any, until then. I couldnt figure out WTF was wrong with the thing, i got a weird icon on screen when it boots. I called apple, and they were more than happy to help me figure out was wrong, even though they do NOT support any older models of hardware or software. They were able to tell me WTF was wrong, and how to fix it. Im sure if you have some kind of software issue, and the tech agent isnt having a bad they, they just migth be able to give you a hand, or at least point you in the right direction.

Yes, OSX is built off of BSD, so if you want to be a doushe about installing OSX, then just install BSD... I think the whole point of the matter is, its not a Microsoft OS. Even though DOS and Win 3.11 were great.... Still, they cant beat BASH and FCE

Its runs ok on my first generation p4 with a 256 megabytes of ddr sdram (pc133). And about customer suppport, I agree, who calls them anyway!

I might try it on a similar box at school when we go back. (The stupid kids effed Win XP up on it really badly in June.

Also,. I'd say if you wanted to a puritian and use nothing but BSD (which would be freeBSD) go ahead. However Mac OS X has a lot of nice software and sorry to say a better looking and user friendsly GUI then KDE or Gnome. If I got an upgrade to Tiger (which I doubt they replaced CRON with a proprietary program) I'd likely put it on my PCBSD hard drive.

Anybody know about how well this OSX for x86 supports wireless? I wanna try it on my laptop but I'd run right back to Windows or Linux if my wireless didn't work.
