Another topic about a PSOne screen problem

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Another topic about a PSOne screen problem

Post by segasonicfan »

Okay this has happened to two screens now. I accidentally put in too much voltage into the screen and the fure blew..ok. But now the cathode tube doesn't light up at ALL...and I checked all the regs, they're outputting properly. Does anyone have any idea as to what I need to replace?

This happened to me, but it turned out to be a crushed cathode tube wire so the LED mod worked very well to fix it. Also, try pressing the volume/brightness buttons to check if the screen's actually getting power (if you see the very dim rectangles on the screen, it's working). Just do an LED mod on each of them, it looked just as good for me.

yea, the screen works perfect (shows volume/brightness) but I'd really like to get that cathode lighting working. And it's nothing wrong with the tube i plugged it into another psone screen and it lit up fine. Anyone know how to fix this? I'm not a very big fan of the LED mod (i.e. i hate it lol)

The LEDs I used for my LED mod worked great (I used 6 7,000mcd ones instead of the 3 2,500mcd ones Ben recommends) and it looks just as good as the original cathode tube. It wasn't real easy getting them in, but it wasn't impossible either. I'd check for a broken lead on the transformer or something, it could be that.

And where did you put each one?

Code: Select all

Like that?

No. The cathode tube is a U, right? So I put them facing every straight section of the tube, one on each end. I have pictures!

This one is a picture of the unmodded light box from the screen. You can clearly see the cathode tube in its u-shape

These are the white LEDs in the light box. Look closely for their positioning Edit: link removed

This is a picture of the screen running off of composite from my GameCube (the opening logo).

This is another pic, this time from Super Mario Sunshine. The highlights look a little blown out, but that's just the camera. Note that I did NOT do the brightness mod.

Edit: Stupid of me not to include this: The screen now takes 500mA to run instead of the original 1A. This is not the promised 310mA from Ben's mod, but it is a small price to pay for beautiful image quality.

wow, that does look as good as the original cathode :O *stunned* Could you tell me more about the LEDs? Like where you bought them? I'd also like to know the specs for them such as size, viewing angle, current draw, voltage etc. ^_^ If it REALLY is as good as the cathode mod I want to put LEDs in my PS2 portable screen and maybe my CDX ultima as well ;-)

Ok, the LEDs came from a post in the "Wow, the PSone LED mod SUCKS" topic.
th3c4rd wrote:thought i put the link for the led's in my last post... here it is:
http://www.ledautomotive.com/OrderInfo/ ... htInfo.asp
btw, you can order a psone screen from ebgames.com it's about $29 plus shipping (1 day overnight is $10, so looking at $40 in all on that)
BTW, the viewing angle on these is 30 degrees as well
They are good, but pricey, the 6 I bought were about $10 + S/H. They seem to be based in North or South Carolina. If you live in the UK, go for www.ultraleds.co.uk. They have 10,000mcd ones for less than these, plus they have the same viewing angle!

Another advantage to the LED mod is that it makes the screen viewable by a camera, something that was a problem with the original cathode tube.

**EDIT**

Also, are there two in the upper left, upper right, and lower right corners of the box in your pics?

Damn, didn't mean to do that…

Please edit your post, I'll edit mine.

The placement is so:

One in the upper left, facing right, one in the lower left facing right, two in the upper right, one facing left, one facing down, two in the lower right, one facing left, one facing up.

did you get those LEDs shaved or not? It looks like shaving them would be a LOT better (looking at the Buyers Guide on the site)

Nope, it would've cost too much. What does shaving do anyway, remove the ring around the base? If it does that, there is no point, they fit anyway.
