Children should be started on a computer as early as possible, in my opinion. This would help them learn how to use it properly and eventually learn how to fix them themselves. That way they will feel secure in front of a computer and they won't have to call that overpriced Geek Squad house-call tech support.

I started using a Mac SE back when I was 3 or 4. About when I was 6 or 7 I was installing INITs and CDEVs (extentions and control panels). I even boosted it from 4MB of memory to 8MB. When I was about 9 or 10 my dad helped me move the hard drive in it from it to an SE/30. Horray dangerous voltages! (nobody got hurt.)

Of course the systems shouldn't be those stupid "Disney Kidz" computers. (The bright blue things with the disney logo everywhere. They really solidify the Disney monopoly in the new generation.) Because how are kids supposed to learn about using real computers when they're clicking on a giant button with Mickey's face on it that says "Games" when you roll over it? While some parents may think that a simple computer is better for a kid, I believe it's not good at all. If they grow accustomed to a really basic interface, they will have a harder time adjusting to Windows or Linux.

Kids should have their own computer around 5 years old, but they shouldn't have internet access until they're about 10. From 10 to 14 they should have supervised internet access. After that they should be able to be online by themselves. Of course they should be educated in telling if someone is up to no good, and they should be told how to handle those types of situations. And of course parents should install a hardware firewall and router installed to keep the kids' computer (and their own) safe from attack from hackers, spyware, and stuff like that. And they shoudl realize that AOL won't keep their kids safe.

As for the computer, it should run either a basic version of Linux or Windows 2000. NOT Windows XP, bcause 2000 is essentially the same thing. But any OS with user profiles is fine, so there can be a profile for the kids that doesn't let them change critical system options, and one Admin password for the parents with full access.

I have a 2 and a half year old daughter who can play some children's educational games already. Of course, we don't just sit her there and forget about her. We limit her time to use the computer. But I definitely think that learning the basics of how to interact with a computer at an early age will give her an advantage later in childhood over other kids. In fact, she's been able to work a mouse for a looong time. It really freaked out my wife and I. At just a year and a half she understood that moving this mouse thingy moved the arrow on the screen. Before we knew it she was playing Flash games on the PBS Kids website. We would even leave a link to the website on the desktop and she knew which one it was and to double click it to open it.

As soon as she's ready, I'll teach her the basics of computing and eventually programming.

When the time comes, I'll follow her usage of the internet and not censor it until I find she's going to sites I deem inappropriate for her age at that time.

that was on a 4/20? what an odd coincidence that they did that on Hitler's birthday--why didn't the news cover that angle?

It wasnt a coincidense, they found out evidense for it and they did have it on the news, i remember it. Also, there's a lot of evidense that there were more shooters, like the fact that there were confirmed gunshots 10 minutes after the two kids killed themselves

I started with a Tandy, I think, then DOS, then Win 95, then 98, then XP. Now I have my own laptop.

I self-learned. No mouse. Only text. It was great. Start early. I didn't have internet untill 1999. Never used AOL.

I would never use parental controls or supervise.

Oh, and I got Turok Dionasur Hunter when I was young, so what? I hated the game , but I never got any "violency" from it.

Who cares, it did absolutly nothing to me. People seem to think that "violent games" ruin your mind. Not me.

As for those kids. Why did the parents have guns anyways?

THey were 18 years old I at the time so they bought the firearms by themselves. I am very vocal with supporting the second ammendment and some things just can't be prevented. If they didn't use assualt rifles they would have used daggers or huntting knive. A rifle or pistol is a tool not a killing machine. Humans are killing machines.

I agree, violent games don't make people go crazy and kill people...those people just want a way out so they blame video games.

Also, once again I sorry but it has to be done
