Actually, there was an official disk drive released in Japan for it, but it never caught on. There were 12 games made for it that only worked through the disk drive. There are also a few pirate accessories (the CD-ROM drive comes to mind) that were made to use it.

The CD add-on you're thinking of was the PlayStation, and that was for the SNES. Nintendo had partnered up with Sony, but the deal fell through and Sony changed the PlayStation into a standalone console.

Pretty sure Turbo Tax is right on this one, and I know for a fact the port is NOT on the mini-SNES either. I believe that the cartridge slot is wired directly to the port on the SNES, I know it is on the N64, and since they don't take the same carts, they aren't the same.
