it's the very thing I'm planning on using so that I don't have to use itunes. although there IS something annoying about not being able to just drag n' drop(one of the few advantages of my lyra AV jukebox. not enough to make me want to keep it, though.)
I know that you can look at it through Windows Explorer, but your average Joe is going to use iTunes. When using a Mac I don't think you can do it at all
all you have to do on either platform is enable viewing of hidden files.
that's just a tad harder on a mac.

speaking of ipods does any one know of a freeware program that allows you to backup (take off your ipod and put them on your computer) for xp? ipodcopy looks good but without buying it you can only take like 100 songs off your ipod.

there is a program called ephod, but I didn't have much luck with it. When you google it, be sure to search for "ephod ipod" or else you'll get some biblical stuff

To back up the songs on the mp3 player, I use MS Plus! XP Media Edition's Analog Recorder, connect a cable between the headphone jack and PC, and record an extra copy.
You could also do something like this with 2 PCs to get free music through streams.
Alright i know this is all old but i am going to get an ipod soon and i was looking at whetehr or not to get a color or just a 4th gen, i would prefer a 3rd gen if anyone has a link to a trustworthy site i can buy it from. But one of my questions is do all of those programs and hook ups still work with the color ipod casue i have seen you can tarnsfer the track piscture with. Again i would like to buy a 3rd or 4th black and white one but for $40 more i can it get in color.

iPods rock! I love mine. I needed a computer when I started college full-time last year. I got it because they had a deal where you buy an iBook and get $200 off an iPod. After the $30 off student discount it cost only $70.
Grabbing music off it isn't hard at all. Here's what you do on a mac:
1) open terminal
2) type in "cd /Volumes/[i]iPod name here[/i]/iPod_Control/Music/" (without the quotes and replacing the "iPod name here" with the name of your iPod (if it has spaces in it you will need a "\" before each space)) and hit ENTER
3) type in "ls" and hit ENTER, you will see several folders here like F00, F01, etc... your music is in these folders
4) to copy it off the iPod use "cd [i]folder name[/i]" to change to one of the folders as mentioned above (to get back to the previous folder use "cd ..") the command to copy [i]all[/i] of the music in that folder to your desktop is "cp * ~/Desktop"

Or, you can press command-F, add 1 search criteria and switch it to Visibility: Visible and Invisible items, set it to search the specific place of your iPod and search for all audio files (switch the first one to type). All music will come up and you can browse through and copy them to where you like. No offense, I like Unix too, using the GUI is faster and easier in this case.

That's to protect you from pirating. IE: Put it on your friends computer, take all the tunes off.
Fortunately, ther ARE programs you can use to take them off. Senuti, for Mac comes to mind.
