A rectangular 9v battery only has about 150 mah, so it won't run it for very long.

You're better offf with the 6 AAs.

With the portable your powering the screen and system that will add up to abotu 300-500mA. At that rate your battery would last about 2 hours, that is if the heavey draw doesnt kill it first. Use rechargable batteries, they pay for themselves after about 5 recharges hold much better capcity and will not fail like alkiline.

How do you figure that a 150 mAH battery will power a device drawing about 700 mA for 2 hours? It would last about half an hour, don't do it unless you want extremely short playing times.

Edit: less than 15 minutes, not 1/2 hour

He was referring to the average 9V, which is about 900mAh, not 150mAh.

You really shouldn't have much of a problem here: use 6 rechargable batteries, get a 4 battery holder and a 2 battery holder from RadioShack and wire the black lead of one to the red lead of the other (one set, not both sets). The leads you have left are positive (red) and negative (black), which you should then wire to a regulator that goes to your portable.
