If you have a DVD burner, just use a DVD-ripping program, then convert the resulting VIDEO_TS to an AVI file or something. Then, burn a copy of the original DVD with your DVD burner.

Finally, do you have a Mac? A Mac makes all of this easier than…anything. First you open DVDrip and rip the DVD, then you open the VIDEO_TS in iDVD and export it as whatever you want. If you want to burn it back to DVD, open the VIDEO_TS in iDVD and burn it to a fresh, blank DVD.

I'm not sure how to do all of that on a Windows machine, but you can be sure it won't be as easy and will require some extra software that won't be free.
