Hip Gear Screen Controller quality

Post by extremesonic »

This isn't about the screen or hacking it in anyway, this is about the actual controller, so that why I put it here. I've always been intrigued about getting one of these, except using it for its actual purpose(you can do that with electronics i hear :D ), but like most people I'm cautious when it comes to 3rd party controls as then can be really really bad. So anyone who has actually used one(more specifically the PS2 or GC ones) how is the quality of the controller? I know its not going to be as good as first party controllers, but I was just wonderingr if it is really really bad, or if its just okay. Also if it does blow is there a better screen controller(controller wise)

Well I only have the PS2 Hip Gear Screen. I've played it on my PSone, its not a bad controller. Really what you'd expect of any 3rd party controller. The only problem I had was that the D pad was not correctly alined, it was off a little.

If you the Sony controller you might not like the controller then as its an 8 directional disc rather then 4 directional pad.

Thats it. Someone else is going to have to inform us about the Xbox and GameCube.

IGN wrote a review. They said the quality was good, the only reason it scored low was because the hinge to the screen was Weak. They also said the headphone jack was a little iffy, but otherwise, it was great

PS2: Buttons have to be mashed.

Xbox: The controller is a little wide but it's okay. Overall a very good controller.

The GC controller felt pretty solid. I'm not sure how it would have held up in gameplay because I don't have a GC but it felt like a pretty good controller (as good as a goofy GC controller can be). It feels more like a playstation controller with wierd buttons (big A little B half circle X and Y ... who designed this controller? Seriously, the N64 controller was wierd but comfortable, but this is just ridiculous)and the analog sticks feel very responsive. The shoulder buttons are like SNES shoulders but with DC type feelingl. The d pad was pretty bad (expected), but everything else is ok. The screen itself however has a cheap ribbon cable from the lcd to the board that tears easily (be careful).

That's how the GCN controller is originally, except the DPad is better.
