Its a little over kill but you can use it, hell Ben used a 11v battery with the handbuilt NES in the book.

1 amp is a bit low. I'd look into radioshack's 3 or 3.3 amp RC batteries.

With an Atari you dont need a lot of power and it depends on the screen he's going to use. That battery setup isnt bad at all I'm using that for my PSoneP. The only difference is that the one he's thinking is Ni-CD (reconsider, they suck!) and mine is Ni-MH and is rated at 1.6A. Going after something like what Ben uses in the CNC NESp from the book would be going over you dont need that much power and that battery will make up over half the weight of the portable.

Only other option I guess I could suggest is to you is buy from RadioShack a 4 AA battery holder and a 2 AA one. Set them up in a series and you have a setup like Ben had on the Handbuilt Atari. You'll also be about to use AAs that can hold up to 2200mA.

Actually, he used that battery. It is supposedly 9.6v, but it actually outputs 11v. I wouldn't bother with that battery, you can get TWO Ni-MH 7.2v batteries that will give you a total of 6A and will fit in the same size as that battery. Only downside is that you will need 2 chargers (the one in that picture is the one you need) or more time to charge.
