I also tried this a while ago, bought two gyromite games, both with no adapters.
While I was at game crazy the other day, i noticed on some old Super Mario Bros. games (sans duck hunt) that some carts had the trademark symbol on the label, and others did not. I only saw the tops of the carts and not the front; both employees (white sox fans
) did not seem insterested in helping me on account of my Cubs shirt.

If worse comes to worse buy one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/Card-Edge-Connector ... dZViewItem
I think its the same thing that is found in Game Genie cartridges nd the Gyromite ones.

Hmm...I may have to try pulling it out then...
And it did take me several tries to get one, and it WAS in a Gyromite cart.
Here's some more tips I've found on my successful quest for the adaptor.
1, If it only has 3 screws on the back of the cartridge (two on the edge corners and one in the middle), it will NOT contain an adaptor. It must have 5 screws (One on each corner and one in the middle).
2. At least some, if not all adaptors were used before the security screws were implemented into NES cartridges. A precisionflathead screwdriver should be enough for those cartridges, so don't waste your money buying the standard 3.5mm Gamebit. If you see these screws this is a good prospective cart, as it is an early one. These should always have 5 screws. If you find a three screw cart with flathead screws in it, it is either very rare, or the screws are not original.
3. The label on the back of the cartridge must also meet certain criteria. On most carts, the word "Nintendo" in centered on the bottom of the grey label with the copyright year, 1985, but on the carts you are looking for, it will lack the copyright year, and the word "Nintendo" will be shifted all the way to the far bottom-right of the label.
4. On some NES carts, the edges will be missing some connectors if that game does not use them. Usually these missing pins are in the middle of the game cartridge connector. The adaptor ALWAYS has ALL 72 pins on it. If a cart lacks even a few pins, it does not have an adaptor.
Carts that meet these criteria will not always have an adaptor inside, but they are a good way of quickly sifting through to the right cartridges to check.
