some questions...

Ok, im building a VCSp and i got a few questions, first of all, will a hip gear screen work with it? and what about a game gear screen? also, does anyone know where i can get a custom case for it? thanks.

A Hip gear screen should work.

You can't use the Game Gear screen unless you get the TV tuner adaptor and leave the entire gamne gear intact.

I'm sure Triton could put together a case for you.

You can also build a custom case out of aluminum strips and engraving plastic. This is a much cheaper and faster method than having someone build it for you, plus it gives you more glory.

Also, I thought I'd mention that Game Gear screens aren't good due to the crappy screen they use. Try looking at this site here: http://doomportables.gptheatre.co.uk, or doomportables.tk if you want something shorter (though it will load a little slower at first)

As for the case, I really thing wood cases are great for Ataris, since it has the retro look. Try a cigar box or something. Or, if that doesn't suit your fancy, they have craft boxes at craft stores

A hardware store and a trophy shop respectively. Or you could get one made via a CNC machine (laser cutter or router). It looks excellent (especially Ben's cases that he has in his book), but is a fairly expensive way ($60 - $90 average for operation) to make a case. It also is best if you know the case will work well BEFORE you pay to get it made. This is where Ben's cases are great.

By all your questions it sounds like you don't have the book, or have it and don't read it. All this is in the book maybe not as descriptive or having corralating pictures but it is all there so you should invest in that before you go hacking up an atari.

Yeah, but the book is meant for a newbie that just wants it done, which is fine. If you want to take your own path, learn a thing, or just want to save some money, you don't need the book.

Yeah, but it is very helpful in designing your own portable because you get an idea of the sizes of stuff, what batteries will work and how to do the LED mod well. I have found it very helpful.

I have a method I use. To make cases, I take an acrylic sheet, put a paper with my case design over it. Cut out the stuff with a XACTO knife. Drill SCREWholes, hotglue the thing together and screw it together. Beautiful case to be beautified by adding decals and PAINT. I prefer neon.

thats a good idea!, where can i get acrylic sheets? and where can i find tact switches for my D-pad, i cant find them at radioshack.

Tact switches can be ordered from online suppliers like http://www.digikey.com and acrylic sheets can be found at home improvement stores and sign shops, and stuff.

Search for "tact switch" on Digikey, scroll down to "Switches" and click on "Tact Switches" which has about 1,300 items. Enter the correct filters and behold! Tact switches!
