In order to have a video play on say a DVD player (stand alone) you need to have it encoded in to MPEG-2 format. This doesnt mean it has to be a DVD persay as you can have lower quality audio and burn it to a CD thus making either a SVCD (Super Video CD) or a Mini DVD. SVCD can hold between 30 and 40 minutes of video, a Mini DVD can hold only 20 minutes of video as its the same quality as that of your typical movie disc.

bbMPEG is one I've used to convert AVI to MPEG before. Its easy and very straight forward. I will however not do any support service for those on the board. I think people need to play with something to learn it best, like I did.

My vote is get yourself a Phillips DVP-642 and don't bother with re-encoding. It can play DivX, MPEG 1-4, and certain WMVs (so YMMV on the Windows movie maker program).

A single layer DVD-R (which is largest type of DVD compatable with nearly all DVD players) can hold 2 hours of MPEG-2 encoded for DVD, however, it'll hold an entire season of a TV show MPEG-4/DivX encoded.

www.audioutilities.net/download/loc/rn9493.exe

This is what I always use to convert my videos into DVD...then I just burn them with nero.

I hear TMPGEnc is supposed to be good at encoding MPEG2's. However the free version only supports MPEG2 for 30 days. Then you have to buy it if you want to use the MPEG2 features.
EDIT: Also, most DVD burners come with basic converter software, which you could use. However, such programs are usually quite limited in what they can do.

Thats what I use

Add KVCD codecs (google it) to it and you have a nice little program
