It just reads the dots as 1's and the spaces as 0's to compile the code that's necessary to run the games.
I wish there was a program out there that let you make your own eReader cards... that would make homebrew game testing easier*.
*except for the whole P.I.T.A. eReader reading.

You need an ultra-high res scanner and a laser printer. (inkjet ink spreads into the paper because the paper absorbs the liquid ink.)
