My PS2 two thing HACKING BLOG

Post by benheck »

Oh no, a BLOG! How horrid!

Well, it's been 1.5 days since I got a PS2 two (as I will now call it). I figured I was going to get that battery from Wal Mart (ug) anyway so I went out and got it. It does 9 volts with 5400mAH of juice.

I had a PSOne screen laying around (well, actually in a partially-built SNESp) and I hooked it and the PS2 two up the to the battery. I didn't bother regulating anything, I figured if the PS2two wanted 8.5 volts 9 was close enough. 9 might seem a bit high for the screen as well but it didn't explode or anything so I was content.

Ok, so running the screen (modified with white LED's), the PS2two and sound consumed 1.9 amps at 9 volts. So you'd MAYBE get 2.5 hours out of that battery. Not too terrible...

I just got done playing PS2 on the thing for 1 hour. The battery got heated about 15 min in, probably due to the high amp draw, but it kept working. I figured I'd give it a break, play some Medal of Honor, and then play the thing some more until it dies. During the break I'm not charging the battery more, however.

So tomorrow I'll probably post as update. Designing the case shouldn't be TOO hard, the big thing was "can a battery run it?" and the answer so far appears to be yes...

Stay tuned!

Wow, two days in and youre already talking about a case. This has to be one of the quickest portables yet! :D

Yeah I have to agree, it took you 5-6 hours to build one of those Ataris, if your already designing a case then ist hardly as complecated as we all htought.

Well he is the portable building master!!!! Did the psone screen really work with 9 volts? I always thought it would get screwed up at around 8........
Anyway, good luck with your PS2p!
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

Wow, so that means the amp draw of the new ps2 is around 1.4A, which is a lot better than it was before :)
Ben's going to beat me as far as building a portable out of the new ps2 though because no stores in my area have them yet

The built-in fan near the CPU heatsink (which is also much smaller than the old one) says 8.5 volts and .55 amps! I'm going to replace this with another smaller fan I have and use the airflow from the DVD drive to help cool the heatsink. Maybe that'll get the power even lower. I mean, come on, most PDA's are like 500-600 MHZ these days, twice as fast as a PS2 and they don't use fans and heatsinks. I think it's overkill.

So the draw is actually 850mA with a 550mA fan?!? Wow, I NEED to get one of these

That can't be possible. I mean, the DVD drive alone would suck up quite a bit of power, I'd imagine

If I can get atleast $100 out of selling my old PS2 and a few games I'd get one but I m sceptical as to if I can.

I can hardly wait to see how this turns out. It will mean we'll have two of the four 128bit systems crossed off the list, isnt it awsome.

I just bought one yesterday. I love how quiet it is compared to the older PS2. You can barly here the noise from the fan.
I've never built a portable before and I hope to make this one my first.

I've done allot of soldering before like PS2, Xbox mod chips, hacked mame arcade controls and other creations. So I think I'm up to the challenge I just don't know much about amps and resistors so I'm hoping that Ben will share his findings like he has for his other creations.

Hm, so that's why the pstwo takes an awkward 8.5 volts... I guess a fan with lower voltage would probably do the trick, but the board has two regualtors on it, I'm thinking for 5v and 8v. Also, Ben was playing Medal of Honor, which was a psone game. The power intake would probably increase with a DVD game.
