RF Modulator Questions on NESp

Hey everyone, this is my first time here and I read all the information on ben hecks amazing consoles he created (he is really a genius) and I decided to go and try to make a NESp. This is my first time ever modding with any game console so please bare with me

So far I have stripped my nintendo down to the motherboard and removed the controller and power cables. The next thing requires me to remove the RF modulator as read here: http://www.classicgaming.com/nestable/c ... age1.shtml ...I am confused about which of the 5 pins to desolder on the RF Modulator, and basically how to go about this. If someone could provide me with further explanation it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks-minkster

Remove the pins in those same spots on the actual Nintendo board itself where they connect, and the big clumps of solder on the back where the RF modulator connects.

Oh ok I saw the spots on the nintendo. I did have a little trouble desoldering but I ended up getting out the five pins. I didn't know desoldering could be so hard

, now whats left is for me to remove the big chunks of solder. Does anyone have good techniqes when it comes to desoldering, because I tend to be slow at it

Use copper desoldering braid or a solder sucker.

A solder sucker is kind of like a miniature turkey baster. You just melt the solder with the iorn and suck it up with the sucker.

Copper Braid is easier to use, in my opinion, because you don't have to clean it out. Just put the braid on top of the hard solder and press the iorn to the braid. The solder will get drawn up into the braid.

Yeah, I've been using a soldering iron and the solder sucker. I tried to take off the chunks of solder, and I got a lot of metal off, but the latches which hold the nes together are still connected with metal. I'm having trouble sucking it out in the corners (like a 90 degree angle corner). Maybe I'll go buy one of those braids to see if it will get the job done thanks.

(Off topic) Also, for some reason it seems like my thread dissappears and I cant find it, nor can I log in. Then I looked in the members list and my name was gone from the list. And then a couple hours later my thread appeared and I was able to login. It was really weird, and it happend twice. Is it a bug on the forums or what? Well what ever it is I hope it gets resolved soon

EDIT: It seems to only happen in mozilla firefox...in IE it works fine..sorry about that.

When I removed the RF box from my NES board, I used a soder sucker and a screw driver. Put the flat head under the box and gently pry up the box with the screwdriver. It works great.

Oh wow, I should have thought of that rather than sucking up all of solder making the job time consuming. I'll try that out! Thanks a lot...its my first time doing all of this soldering stuff and I'm glad to hear all of the tips and tricks to get the job done...I really appreciate the help.

The screwdriver method worked great, and I got the RF modulator officially off my nes board. I am a little worried though, because I have a couple minor scratches on the back from desoldering. Would that ruin my nes board in any way? Well now i'm off to making my own video amplifyer thingy.

scratches shouldbt aslong as you dont cut the traces

On my nesp, I don't want the cartridge connector to stick out like a sore thumb so I would need cables to solder onto the nes board and onto the PCB edge connector.Do you guys have any suggestions of good cables that would work nicely to solder together?
PS: I do have a concept design of my Nesp, should I post it on this thread or create a new one?

Are you asking what to use to relocate the cart slot?

the easiest way is buy a cartridge slot and rip off the original cartridge slot and solder into the original holes!b

Yes, I think so since I want to move the cart slot to a position that will not have the cartridge sticking out all the way like the Game Axe. I think later on I will buy ben's book so I don't have to keep asking so many questions.

Those two pics are my concept design of what I'd want my Nesp to look like in the future if anyone was interested. Well thats all for now
