how could i use my laptop?

i have a laptop that's 133mhz with a 1gb HD. right now it has no OS and i tried to instal win 98 on it but that doesn't have the drivers i need. i might consider installing linux on it but i don't know what i would be able to do with linux. are there any emulators or anything i can run on linux at 133mhz? what is linux good for?

I sugest win95 or below couse i have not seen any Emualtors supporting linux

Linux can run almost anything. (even Windows and Mac programs with emulators). On Zophar's Domain (zophar.net) there's Linux emulators for NES, SNES, Atari 2600, and other platforms.

Try downloading Live CD versions of different Linux ports, so you can try befroe you install.

(I have used Knoppix, Damn Small Linux, Ubuntu, and Slax linux, they're all pretty good. Start with DSL, it's a quick download. But I wouldn't download any distros with any kind of dial-up internet, weather it's "turbocharged" or not.)

Windows XP is my favourite OS, stable, and compatible with a lot of games, which is easily my chosen OS for the N-Forcer if it materializes. I'm in the process of making a nice RPG in a traditional-style (where you go into fights, not hack-n-slash ones like Zelda and Might and Magic)

laptops require special drivers from the manufacturer since they all have custom displays/sound/input etc. I'm pretty sure they'll still be at the website.

I also think win NT may be your best option for such a slow machine.

Nothing runs on NT very well.

Actually, all the versions of Linux I used automatically detected all my hardware correctly. (full color, sound, ethernet, the works)

If anything, run a light version of Linux, such as Damn Small Linux (yes that's the title.

)

When you ask the queston "What's linux good for?" Thats kind of hard to answer. Linux is a very flexable and versitle thing, depending on the distro you get you can make linux run on just about anything.

As for your application, DSL. Its small light weight and runs very well on older equitment. Try it, its only a 50mb download.

Slax might work as it has fluxbox aswell but I dont know much about it, besides the point its based on Slackware. It is however 200mb download and wouldnt eat up too much bandwidth to get it.

stable heh....you musnt overclock very much

generally everything's a lot less stable then anyway.
XP's extremely solid. I had trouble with a driver once...and that's about it.
of course it has a lot of overhead.

edit: daguuy, since you can barely run windows, I wouldn't bet money on serious windows emulation

It might. With DOSbox you will probably be able to run Windows 3.1 and possibly Windows 95.

And with Basilisk II you can run Macintosh System 7 software!

Isn't Linux great?
