I'm interested in making a portable, and I have the book and everything, and I'm doing all my research, and case design first. I'm gonna build mine from a noac, and probably with a 2player plugin and A/V out.
Anyway... is it necessary to disable the built in games? I have a powerjoyIII (superjoy?..same difference?) and I intend on making it nice where I can put in my own cartridge discreetly. What if I have it and don't want a cartridge? Can I build one without disabling built in games? Such a thing might be convenient. If I don't disable, do I have to allow the unit to get more power?
NOAC built in games...why disable?

You most certainly can build one that way!
Just put an on/off switch on the jumper wire that disables the built in games. (I suggest one of those roller-lever switches from Radio Shack. You can mount and modify it so it automatically disables the internal ROM when a cart is inserted.)
From what I heard, the games aren't all that great, but since I don't have a NOAC I guess I'm not a good judge of it.

Some NOACs (the SuperJoy III that I have is one) don't have built in games. Instead, they have a cartridge (famicom compatible) with the games on it. So if you want to play the games (which aren't that bad - they include some basic Nintendo and Atari games and look and sound pretty close to the real things) you just plug in the cartridge.

Get an SPDT roller switch (do they even make those?) and solder the jumper wire to one on the outside, the 5 volts in the middle, and the 5 volts in on the family converter. (Warning, this is only a thought from S q u e e !, and may not work, so if it doesn't do not blame S q u e e !, Kelly Roberts, or the Benheck.com team of portablizers)bicostp wrote:You most certainly can build one that way!
