Starting my SNESp, Pics--Watch Out!

Post by LethalMeatball »

Hey guys! I actually got the stuff to make my portable. I am not familiar with this kind of stuff, so I am asking for your help in a lot of things, first off, I will show you what I have!

Mini-Snes: Image

Controller: Image

Battery: Image

Project Box: Image

Soldering Tools: Image

HipGear Screen: Image

(Last but not least)
Old SNES case taken apart: Image

NOW that I have all the parts (i think) that I need to make a portable.... I have a few questions for you veteran portable people. On the snes, how do you take the plastic off on the back, where the power and video stuff plugs into? Just rip? It looks like I might rip off the video port if I just pull it.

Next, since I haven't Soldered before, but my Brother, Doofus, has... I need to know, in your guys' opinions, what should I start working with first? the monitor to the board, and getting that working? I'm new to this, so please help me along :D Thanks a lot!

1.desolder the leads under the DC jack to get rid of the plastic
2.desolder the leads under the vid port then pry it off with a screwdriver
i can help you with some more stuff if you have any more questions

first i would try getting the snes to run off batteries on a t-v then i would hook the snes up to a screen

i did it a stupider way which i had to just hope the snes would work and i didnt fry it

If you havent soldered before i suggest try soldering and desoldering old broken stuff. Like i started by desoldering stuff off an old radio alarm clock and then soldering them back on.

And use lemon juice to help you solder! :D

If you can find some really cheap electronics, open them up, and try desolderring and resolderring some wires and chips. If you can do that a few times, you're ready to go.

I'd suggest not using a soldering gun. I had one project(the beginning) and it is farly difficult to be using for small electronics(or electronics in general), go get a smaller pen shaped soldering iron, much better for this kind of thing. Also motoman is right do some practice before had(luckly i had a totally fried old SNES board to use)
SNESp - 100%
Protable X - 15% - I need money :(

hey guys, sorry, my internets been out for a while.... I went thru bens book, and desoldered everything he said to do, except for the capacitors (8 of em).

Do any of you guys think I need to relocate those capacitors? If not, I wont, because its a lot of work.

Also, I dont know the first thing about power, so I am gunna need lots of help when putting power to my system... I have the 7.2V 3000mAH Ni-MH battery you guys told me to get from radio shack... the monitor is a hipgear, so I printed the pinouts.... I hoipe I understand it all and get it done here in a week or so! :D

Thanks for all the help guys!

for the capacitors, you could actually just bend them down to make more space :)....just move one to the left, the next one to the right, etc.
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

I didnt think I needed my board that flat, so I decided not to remove all the capacitors... I am wondering if any of the people who have made portables, specifically the SNESp, if any of them used the HipGear Screen, because since I'm new at all this, the pinouts on this forum got me all confused, I bet if I sat down for hours and figured it out it would make sense, but if anyone here might have some tips on what to do and how, it would be more than helpful.

Thanks a lot!

Search for Ladyada's hipgear pinouts thread.

Trust everyone on the capacitors, it will make the portable thinner and is not as much work as you think. Heck, I started soldering before I was 10 and I STILL gained most of my skills in less than the past year.

Edit: You should also be the first to use the original membrane-pad controller switches in your portable, just take the board from the controller and wire it to the motherboard. You could also take the controller port and cut it in half (to have two separate ports) and integrate the second port into the portable. Also, the original AV out port and power jack are good things to reuse (not in their original positions though) in the final design. Just put them somewhere else in case you want a larger screen. Finally, you might want a smaller project box unless you want a HUGE portable.

the case I have at the moment barely fits the mini-snes, its not that big, and I dont feel like pulling a Ben, and cutting my board in half, and fixing that later :D

I will be relocating my cart. slot soon, and then I am gunna need help on how to get my battery to work on the portable. Other than that, I will be working a lot this upcoming week, so I wont have a whole lot of time to fiddle with it, and this past weekend I was really lazy and didnt touch it :O

EDIT: Hey guys, I didnt want to post twice, but ok, here is what happened... I started to desolder all 62 pin things on the cartridge port, well.... as i finished, and pulled up, about half of em or so, stayed on the board, and pulled from the cart. port itself. I am wondering.... If I was to put all of them back in, and had them look as close to the ones that DIDNT come out, would it still work when I soldered it back on? or did I just dominate my portable by owning the cart. slot? PLEASE HELP :O Thanks!!!!!

I'm not sure about fixing that cart slot, but you could try ordering a new slot from Digikey (I know they sell them) Look for a 62 pin slot, but if you can't find one that looks like the SNES slot you have, buy a 66 pin slot and don't connect the 5th row from each end.
