PSOne Screen Crossover?

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

PSOne Screen Crossover?

Post by segasonicfan »

Okay, I've been working with PSOne screens for a while now and while they are GREAT LCDs I can't get over the fact that there always seems to be some crossover/noise in the picture. RGB is just so uch better without moving lines in the background. Now I know it's not the video lines themselves on my system because I grounded and shielded them like hell and it plays PERFECT on my big screen TV. But my PSOne screen always gets noise in the picture. I have a huge grounding plate behind the screen and it's all grouded through the four screw holes/screen as well. Should I put grounding around the transformer or somewhere else? Or does anyone else know of any solution/fix for this? Any help is much appreciated!

Hi
I had the same problem and the solution was quit simple and very irritating when I power my screen by tranformer the lines appear but if I use my Batteries no lines.
Why? I don't know but it works!

Please help visit my topic to see if you can help me with my other problems :!:

Do you mean simply running the screen off battery power? I still got lines when I did that. However, I grounded the HELL out of everything by putting a sheet of copper around the back PCB and transformer and soldering it to selveral groundes spots. the result was about a 90% improvement in the 'lines' which are some sort of crossover occuring from interseption between the screen and my CDX. I highly recommend this as a great fix for the problem =)

Perhaps, instead of shielding all the wires as a bundle, you could shield each individually, and that may improve it by that little bit.

No, it's not crossover occuring from the video wires. When I hook it all up to my TV it's utterly perfect and clear (and I have a 68 inch screen so you can definitely tell). I know it's a problem between interference with the screen and the system because the lines move in accordance to shifts in the lens/CD drive, that's why it's worse when I'm playing CD games (all components/lens are being used) as opposed to carts. The shielding helped tremendously though, and shielding the wires individually is just overkill (though a nice idea and I don't mind overkill). Problem is, even if I wanted to I couldn't do that due to the insane amount of space constriction. The best route to go is shielding the audio wires apart from the video lines cause almost all crossover (in a non-integrated mod) is caused by audio interferece.

I had problems with lines on my PSOne screen during testing, depending on how I had my battery placed. My best guess is that it was reflecting the EMI from the backlight's inverter into the video signal. If I'm right, doing the LED backlight mod should stop the lines, as the inverter and tranformer will no longer be powered after that mod.

tom- I think you're absolutely right. Problem is, I'm far too afraid to do the LED mod. Not that I don't have the ability to do it of course, but I don't want to hinder the picture/brightness in any way. I wish I had some high-res pics to see what the mod looks like finished, but I don't think I'm ever going to attempt it myself unless I know it will reach my perfectionistic standards =P Another hugd problem with opening up the screen is that dust ALWAYS gets in... you always get one little spec on the inside and when you try to take that out you get two more...lol. I hate opening up backlight screens.

oh WOW, I found another way to decrease the crossover! After reading the post over here: http://benheck.com/ipw-web/bulletin/bb/ ... php?t=4250
I soldering in a 16v 1000 cap to see what would happen and it REALLY cleaned up the power line to decrease a lot of crossover! I'm adding one to both my systems now in addition to the copper grounding. Now I'll have the most perfect RGB in the land =P
