Buying a next-gen console? Im not (warning big post)

Post by atkafighter »

Hi this is a big read but i would appreciate your input,
I was just wondering what console will you guys be picking up XBOX 360, PS3, or Nintendo Revolution. Because I have decided I will buy none of them (at least not until they redesign, PSthree would be cool if its still around to make a revision).
XBOX 360 on preorder! I don't see the big rush to get these out the door. Personally I can wait until we can have some truly amazing technology, but I guess it would be a good thing to see PStwos on the sale rack (PS2p? anyone?). Anyway I probably have been watching way too much G4TechTv (or whatever its supposed to be called and too much G4 = about 5 mins Off topic G4 stinks). From what I have seen the next-generation consoles do not appeal to me. I'm not really looking for prettier versions of games I already own, and it seems like Sony, Microsoft, (not really Nintendo I'm not sure what they are trying to do with the Revolution but if they aren't careful the Revolution might go the way of the Virtual Boy, Dreamcast, or possibly too early to tell DS) are just pushing big specs and nothing to show for it.
"LOL ur sooo stOOpid deez gamz will be the roxorr!!!!! Jes look at deez pikz img HUGE BEAUTIFUL RENDER /img" gamer who can't buy mature games without a parent. Before you people get mad and start posting pics from PS3 "gameplay" think about it for a minute. I'll take the Killzone 2 video for example. Is this what a real game looks like? Wheres the HUD, ammunition, is an FPS playable with all that arm swaying, how would you aim? (FYI its pre-rendered sorry fanboys) Go ahead post the Madden pic I've seen it. Thats a great angle for making a precise play "in-game" Don't get me wrong I have nothing against Sony or PS3. I own a PS2 (I also own an XBOX which i use as a dust catcher). The PS2 is a great system but for some reason good games always seem to come out at the same time. Every holiday season there is about 10 "must haves" and a lot of good titles get overlooked (Ico, Prince of Persia I haven't even played them to tell the truth, but I've heard they are great games that got washed out when a bunch of crap came out at the same time). Sony's biggest advantage is at the same time its greatest disadvantage. The GIANT library of games makes it hard to get some quality games. Make another crappy platformer or another hack and slash no wait I want another DBZ game or how about a wrestling game (You get the picture). Sony is also notorius for empty promises. Online play (although it doesn't make or break a system) although free is not very well utilized in the PS2. Sony also boasted about the hard drive capability which is non-existant now. I think I'l just wait for the PSthree so they don't get my money 5 times more than they should (DRE anyone? How many PS2 units have you gone through? *cough* PSP) Eye toy where did your innovation go. Why can't I use my PS2 as a desktop PC yet? Whats this expansion port for? Your not fooling me Sony.
I also own an XBOX and unfortunately I'm not so much of a fan anymore. I remember when XBOX came out it boasted about its great processing power and graphic capabilities, but they forgot to mention the games. Yes I was one of the customers (suckers) who bought an XBOX early and I had one game Jet Set Radio Future (one of the best games ever IMO and a better reason to buy an XBOX than Halo I really need to get Shenmue 2 and you should too) About a year or two later Halo finally dropped to $39.99. So I bought it. Yes, I own Halo just like every other XBOX owner and Halo 2, which did a good job at not being a let-down (unlike every other sequel that has come out since the beginning of time). Other than that I have not really felt like buying games that seem to never go on sale or are available on other cheaper (example Capcom vs SNK 2 = $20 on PS2 Capcom vs SNK 2 EO = $40 used on XBOX ) consoles with the same graphics.
"Ur so DuMb itz bcuz the XBOX haz 2 hav the game on all consolz and tey all suxor thatz y the graphikz r not that good!!!!!!!!!!111!!!1!!one!!11!" to quote an XBOX fan. There is the KOTOR series but as far as RPGs go KOTOR has got to be the clunkiest most choppy animated "RPG" ever, and the only thing that saves it is the Star Wars wrapping, but i guess compared to Galaxies this is the best Star Wars RPG ever (lets not turn this into a flame thread its just my opinion). I used to be an XBOX fan but that was before i bought an XBOX (rooting for the underdog always seems like the right thing to do).
The prices above are likely exaggerated and the XBOX version of CvsSNK2 does support the coveted ONLINE PLAY. "Ya OnlIne Is the roxorr ill pwn u noob LOL !!!!11!!!one!!111!" Online play is great, with the right games. Certain games just throw in online play (*cough* Starwars Battlegrounds LAG, YAY i can post my times from my race ONLINE, i can fight with my big breasted asian girl ONLINE in clunky laggy combat ok thats enough) and use it as a selling point. Halo 2 online play is pretty fun but I need a part-time job to subscribe to XBOX live, get a decent internet connection, and buy new maps to play. Lets see should I do all this to play an average shooter on my tv (thats pretty funny because I would have to buy a tv) or just pay for an internet connection and play some great games on my pc online for free (Some CnC Yuris Revenge anyone? BTW if your into RTS games the CnC pack = $15 you get 6 full games INCLUDING YR). Wait a minute i lost my train of thought oh yeah XBOX 360 (named so it is not confused with being behind PS3) And what games are coming out on the XBOX 360 BESIDES Halo 3? Yeah thought so.
Im not getting into Nintendo today for two reasons: I don't know much about the Revolution (nobody really does) and because i grew up with Nintendo (Its like watching your favorite toystore go out of business because a Walmart opens up with its rolback prices OK sorry off my own topic again). Even though I havent bought a console since SNES (No I didnt buy an N64 or GC why? Because if I wanted a console for one or two games I would have bought an XBOX ...oh wait damn) I did buy a GBA (non-backlight before SP mind you, THANKS Nintendo) and thats good enough for me to be a fan. I think Nintendo is the new Sega thats all I'm saying (sorry Nintendo but its true).
Anyway, I just don't think the industry is taking a step in the right direction. People think you need great graphics for a good game or a great story, or big breasted asian girls (seriously its getting kind of creepy playing these games BTW off topic you know why you own DOA and its not for the fighting because its a crummy fighting game play Tekken 5 instead) When games first came out there were no "endings" no "story" and no "bouncing breasts". The next game I play that has a 30 min intro is getting a trip in the microwave. Sure videogaming is more popular than ever but (like the XBOX proved) power and graphics aren't everything.
Now what was I... oh yeah next-gen consoles. Prepare to spend about $450 on each console, and $70 on each game if they go Blu-ray discs. Ill be happy when they do come out for one reason. Older consoles that I do like will become dirt cheap. I can see it now

I dont understand how you get that Nintendo is becoming the next sega? I think Nintendo is doing good, because they are sticking to their original stuff, aimed mainly for kids. I will not but an XBOX 360, my brother had an xbox when they came out, and sold it because Halo was getting old.... as for the PS3, I only owned the PS1 but in my opinion, you nailed it, they just have a billion games, that run on their same engines, that EA pumps out 100 games a year for, and they never interest me. I will most likely, (in a few years) get a Revolution because then I can have all my favorite classics on one console, also, I still like nintendo, even tho I am almost 18. I never really got into the whole Halo craze, and I am happy, because if I did, I would have bought an xbox or something instead of a computer, and I wouldnt have played HL2 until a year after it was released, when it was re-released on the xbox.

So in conclusion, If I but a console, it would be the revolution, and none other.

It's really close between the Nintendo and the Sony machines(screw the XBox, even if they do have DOA). It doesn't really matter right now though, 'cause I'm not gonna get a new console until well after they're all released.

Yes, most definitely. A single person posting their poorly supported opinions is not going to change my mind and make not buy an Xbox 360 and possibly a Revolution. I'd say I see where you're coming from, but other than one or two points, such as EA releasing far too many sports games and other games that suck, I see no basis for most of your arguments. I'd go into more detail, but it seems you're dead-set in your verdict.

Black Six Is right You dont really have many facts to support your opinions. Its not going to just be prettier versions of games you already have sure they will look better but there is also gonna be a lot more features the games will be more interactive they will do things on these next gen consoles that is not possible with the consoles we have now. Im sure games (especialy online ones) will have way bigger environments and will be able to have more players for sure so instead of playing halo with 16 players online you may bea ble to play with 100 or 200 in a way bigger level. Also the ps3 will be able to output on two tvs wo you could with seven blutooth wireless controllers so you can have six of your freinds over playing on two tvs all from one console this is way better than 2-4 on one tv dont you think. I'm not gonna sit here all day and tell you 9 hundred reasons why next gen is better becuase if you dont already get it then its not worth explaining it.

I'm most likely going to go with the Revolution. Not because its going to be a great system (and it is going to be amazing when its done) its because the only way I could ever afford one is combining all my holiday money together plus a bunch of other stuff.

One thing I can tell you though, there is no way unless someone drops a Brinks security truck on my house that I could ever afford more than one.

Well as for me I probably will get the Revoloution. Why you may ask? Why buy a console that my very well be the last breath of a company that may be going to to go the way of Sega? Well for a couple of reasons:

1. The obvious reason is that if nobody buys it then of course it will be a flop! And then there will be no more Nintendo (of course I still think they have a wild card up there sleave that being the GBE which I think may veay well knock the PSP out of the park since I don't percieve there being a near future succesor to it from Sony) and then in my opinion there may very well be another crash! Call me a fanboy if you want but I don't think that having the market entirely controlled by companies that do not specialize in video games as being a good thing. Would it kill Sony if the PS searies died? maybe but not likely. Would the Xbox dieing kill Microsoft? Don't make me laugh. And so when there is no competition quality will slide and slide and we will be buried under the flood of crummy games.

2. And with no Nintendo there will be no more Gameboys! and then we will be forced to either build our own or pay Sonny's ridiculous prices for PS2ps (or just turn to our pocket PCs/Palms.)

Well that ends my rant for today.

you're right  ! but it will happen the next gen after PS3, XBOX 360 and Rev. Why? because the next gen will have as good graphics and be as fast as anything will ever need so what'll happen after them? nothing, there's no room to improve. as far as the next gen consoles go, they will do well if they're affordable. the one that will probably do the best is revolution because nintendo said they want to keep it affordable

Hey everyone,
Thanks for all your input. I guess my post wasn't worded very well (sorry I must have been tired). But my post was not to start a console war, or to persuade people away from buying next-gen consoles. What I wanted to hear was why I should be excited about the new consoles. I wanted to hear what makes the new games so great. If you think I should have a lot to be exicited about for the next-gen tell me why. The last thing I was expecting was to hear people agree with me. Anyway it seems like the Revolution is the way to go (but if i was going to buy a next-gen to play remade classics I would just buy an Ique. I wish Ique would come out in NA so we can portablize it.)
I didn't even consider a videogame crash but it could be the direction we are going (Nintendo would most likely survive on handhelds alone and Sony/Microsoft would quit the console business) if companies keep pushing big graphics and games that stereotype gamers as mindless idiots (GTA series... I did like GTA3 even with all the glitchy buggy gameplay). Or if gamers allow themselves to have their opinions fed to them (Why does Katamari Damacy recieve great reviews when Billy the Hatcher and the Giant Egg is essentially the same game).
Xxxeagle made a good point about the PS3 outputting to two tvs. I did hear about this feature and I hope it sticks (*cough* hard drive) but if I wanted a PS3 to play with a bunch of friends I'll let my friends buy the machine  . Too bad this really isn't a new idea if you and a friend have two consoles and two tvs you can do the same thing right now. But I think what the PS3 does is allow four gamers to play over two tvs with one console (Two to a screen and I'm not sure the PS3 will have 16 bluetooth signals, but 16 player games on one console would be cool).
Someone should fill me in on what I "don't get" and maybe I'll get it, but until then next-gen still doesnt seem all that promising (to me at least).

I would say Nintendo will become like it's pokemon franchise. It will stay there because it has support. Nintendo still has a magazine because people actually buy it. Nintendo will have the next console because people want it. I think Revolution will be Nintendo's Sega Saturn. Short life, low power, a few hits. As for the others... I don't care.

Graphics aren't everything, but they do contribute a hell of a lot to the emmersiveness of a game. Half-Life 2 without it's pretty graphics would still be a somewhat enjoyable game, but not nearly to the extent of the sensation it has become.

Why be excited about new consoles with improved hardware? Let us not forget that the very underlaying coding of a game must be processed through that very hardware. Improved hardware will not only improve graphics, but it will yeild continuous game levels of a much greater size then seen before, better physics engines, longer play-times, more interaction, improved AI, and much more. For instance, on the clips of the newest Tony Hawk game planned for the Xbox360, the graphics don't look to fantastic, but then you notice that the background buildings are ALL being rendered in realtime, and (for once) you can actually see more than a few blocks down the road.

I noticed that you mentioned that one PS3 game clip of Killzone 2. Unfortunately for your post and points, Sony has stated that those are actual ingame graphics. Come on now. We all like to attribute the qualities of little children to big, bloated mega-corporations, but they simply can't blatantly lie about such things. To do so would be illegal. Those clips- at the least- represent what Sony has Good Reason to believe will be PS3 gameplay. And, if memory serves, there are already a few games which feature near-nonexistence HUDs.

If I even get a nex-gen console, it will most likely be the Nintendo Revolution, due to it's decreased cost and potentially enormous game library. I have my PC for graphical goodness, and it will only take a year or so for the PC community to overtake the console industry in terms of graphical excellence, as it always has in the past. (kisses and hugs comparatively expensive but lovingly hand-crafted, liquid-cooled gaming computer)

First off i would like to comment on the nintendo going the way of sega...

you are all looking at the american view of the nintendo now, it is much more popular in other countries such as japan in which a lot of the most spectacular games come out only there. Also you may think they are going in the wrong direction with games and hardware, but as for games once again looking at america, we have become obsessed with the fps genre. While halo is good and two was a little better is that the only reason to buy a console? No. As for the next generation consoles it will go as it always has. PS will have a 1000 rpgs, 990 will suck terribly. Xbox will have halo fanatics and "buy american" people and "if the graphics rock it must be good". Nintendo will have mario, metroid, and zelda which will all be great games, but wont get all the ps&xbox multi platform games.

As for pricing, it will be expensive, but that wont stop wealthy children from buying all the games just to do it.

As for the power, whoopie.... havingthe ability to make spectacular games wont make the story or gameplay good. So you can see 5 blocks in tony hawk its still going to be the same as the last 6 nothing really innovative. Some games like fps and rpg the power does matter but you are playing the same game pretty much(don't get me wrong i have my share of favorites). Internet will be there on all systems and that will be a plus but will all this really make a better experience if the tech is faulty because its new(believe me i have had my share of problems with the xbox and ps2). But soon production will stop on the old consoles and youll be forced to buy the new ones.

When they come out i will get the REV because i think it will be the most sound and stable system no bugs, adaptability with gba & ds and no excess frills to get the attention of the simple minded.
