Auction Goodness :D

Post by gannon »

I just got back from a surplus auction up at Michigan Tech! I got 6 15" monitors, 5 17" monitors, and 4 Computers for $60!!! :P

The disapointing thing is that they had 19" and 21" monitors selling between $20-30, but I had already spent all the money I had on me :( They also had a huge oscilloscope that went for $25, but that was way after I ran out of money

I wish I was there... Sounds like you did good though. Today I got a C64 floppy drive (1541-II) for 2.50 at a thrift store. But still, all that stuff for 60 bucks?! Thats insane!!!

Why is it that everything good has to be so damn far from my house? I would have gone had I know, a whole day in advance to drive and a reliable car. Getting computer equitment at that price would have made me sooo happy.

So Gannon whatcha gonna do with all the monitors? You should make at least a MAME cab or something... You got the computer, and the monitor all you got to do is hack some keyboards, make a case and wire it all togeather!

A MAME cabinet sounds like a good idea, but it would've been awesome to build one with a 21" monitor! :)
One of the computers I got is an old 70mhz sun microsystems ipc. I'm going to have to make a sun->condensed dsub 15 converter to play around with it though. But how could I pass it up for $1??
Also, all 6 of the 15" monitors I got were for $1 total, that's around $0.17 per monitor!!!

I already started to install linux on one of the machines, but it keeps on freezing at 15%. I'm going to install a different cd drive later and do it again.

Check out this cluster. http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/cluster/ It goes 3.6 GFLOP. You could do something like that with your 1 dollar computers, though I dought it would go that fast! :D

That's pretty cool. I have 2 450mhz computers and a 233mhz computer that I suppose I could put in a cluster, but I'm not sure if it's that necessary since I'm just using it for a file server for my lan.

I wouldn't suggest a cluster, as they take a lot of maintenance, and if your using regular computers(as apposed to the mini-itxs) it will guzzle power. Although it could be pretty cool. Sounds like you got some good deals have fun with them.
