YAY FLEA MARKETS!

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

YAY FLEA MARKETS!

Post by Sir Games-A-Lot »

Just got back with the makings of a new portable:

Atari 2600 Jr.

5.6" screen (together with the Atari for $30)

screen only has s-video:

Which leads me to my question and the reason I put this in screen hacking: does any one know how to build converter to get composite video on it (bon't feel like givin radio shack 21 bucks for there premade one)

It may be a little tricky since I can't find any power in or batteries leading me to believe it draws all power from deveice generating the video.

Just in case any ones interested I also got a handheld CB radio (now looking for a partner hand held or a larger base unit).

I believe that composite to S-Video converters use a special IC, so you will probably have to buy a converter.

Also, could you please replace the image tags in your post with these, because your pics are REALLY big.

Code: Select all

2600

Actually, going from s-video to composite is really easy providing its only a 4 pin s-video signal. This link has instructions for what to do:
http://www.epanorama.net/circuits/svideo2cvideo.html

Of course, the signal would be better if you built a proper circuit to do it, but with the source you're using for video and the size of the LCD itself, it probably wouldn't make much of a difference.

I meant composite to S-Video, which is what he needs. I read that page while looking for a converter for him, but I already knew that it works when you do that anyways.

The S-Video to Composite circuit also works as a Composite to S-Video converter.

Oh yeah, if I remember right, the Atari 2600 composite mod brings out Y and C before mixing them to together to make composite. Which means you should be able to skip the mixing step and hook it directly to S-Video.

It works, but you get a pretty bad quality picture.

thanks for the help and sorry for the pics  (the camera I got last christmas has the worst default settings on it  most of which i've cahnged but i forgot the size)

hmmmm......... skipping the mixing step is a good idea.

by the way i had opened the screen and there are only 4 wires coming from the jack the colors are: red black yellow and brownish

brown dosen't go any where black yellow and red go onto the board with a clip. I find this slightly odd considering there are 6 pin holes on the jack and the rectangular hole.

is this normal? sorry I have never used s-video before even for dvd players and the like so I wouldn't know.

Is there another jack somewhere on the screen for power? If not, then it may not be s-video but just power and composite (red for power, black for ground, yellow for the composite signal)

Edit: I looked up that screen and found this, which says the screen uses composite:
http://www.audio-warehouse.com/web/mdl/ ... detail.asp

I'm guessing that 6-pin is just a connector to another part of the assembly.

You didn't have to link, that's why I gave the HTML tags, which would resize them to 600px width, and you could still see them really well.

Anyways, your plug. The company probably had extra 6 pin connectors, so they used those with only 4 pins being used. What do you mean by brown doesn't go anywhere? Does it just loop back to the same pin as black? black is probably luma/chroma ground, and red and yellow are probably for luma/chroma, but I don't know which. Can you label the picture of the jack that you posted, with the pins that the four wires come out of (with colours)?

Sorry about the image tags I didn't realize what they where unitil after I made the links and was to lazy to change them back. (I'm sorry if I am not very good using phpBB based forums, the only other forum I go to uses a custom setup).

More to the point I tend to aggree with superdeformed and the screen realy just takes composite. as to the brown wire I mean it dosn't go any where as in it's not connected to the board in any way or to another wire or any thing the end of it just hangs there. maybe it came loose (since it does look a little burnt on the coating like it was soldered) i will look for a likely spot when I open it up again.

Now I also have to find the power regulator in it and identify it since I'm guessing that the screen dosn't need all 12V thats just what it would get from the cars lighter system.

thanks for all the help every one.

Dang I hate getting riped off! the screen I bought is cracked severly! This of course makes the lcd go all black in the center, and is totally unfixable. So far I've opened it up and removed the dammaged lcd from the controller board. Now I will have to go find lcds that will work with it (if the system is not completely proprietary). will update in a bit.

Yes you can build an Svideo to composite adapter.

We've established that several times, but that isn't what he needs anyway.
