How about Damn Small Linux?
It is under 50 MB, has good detection, and comes with Firefox, a nice painting program, an Excel clone, and a bunch of other cool stuff! Put it on a hard drive, bootable CD (which doubles as an installation CD), and even a USB drive!
It will also work on anyIBM compatible that is a 486 or better.

If you do go for DSL. Be aware that you will be reinstalling the OS every few months. DSL's development is that speratic and the project doesnt offer a way to upgrade. Personally I'd say if you're going to use it make two partitions (storage and swap) and run form cd, as DSL does have a feature to load your settings in after bootup.
